Xfce desktop icons

As much as I like xfce, the desktop icons are pretty ugly for my taste.
All sets I've tried have the ugly text underneath with cartouche backgrounds.

I've read that with the proper .gtkrc\* file placed somewhere magical one can change the desktop icon text background/foreground/opacity and maybe even font. So far nothing has worked for me.

Has anyone got a nice-looking solution ?

Re: Xfce desktop icons

Have a look at http://git.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/tree/README

* Note that that document is for the git version. You may want to check the installed one.

Re: Xfce desktop icons

Here is ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file stoat posted some time back for setting the Xfce desktop icon background opacity to zero so the text "cartouche" box disappears (full transparency).
Code:
style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
    XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 0
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-label-alpha = 170
    XfdesktopIconVIew::ellipsize-icon-labels = 1

    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-x-offset = 0
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-y-offset = 0
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-color = "#000000"
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-x-offset = 0
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-y-offset = 0
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-color = "#ffffff"

    XfdesktopIconVIew::cell-spacing = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-padding = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-text-width-proportion = 2.5

    base[NORMAL] = "#cccccc"
    base[SELECTED] = "#cccccc"
    base[ACTIVE] = "#cccccc"

    fg[NORMAL] = "#ffffff"
    fg[SELECTED] = "#000000"
    fg[ACTIVE] = "#000000"
}
widget_class "*XfdesktopIconView*" style "xfdesktop-icon-view"

Re: Xfce desktop icons

Sincere thank secipolla & PabloTwo and also Stoat in absentia.

The stoat config is idea for me in that t makes the 'cartouche' text backgrounds transparent and makes the unselected text white. Just what I wanted.

My problem was that in other instructions directed me to write the gtkrc to ~/.gtkrc-xfce and tho' this file is clearly read at login, it had no impact on the display. ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is effective.

And thanks to you for asking the question...now my icons look better. my gtkrc-2.0 was old, I brought it over from my PS3's YDL install and that was brought over from my PS2's wacky Kondara-ized RedHat. basically it only had 2 lines it, one to make the font Verdana 9 and the other to turn on "can change accels" It had more lines in the PS2 version to help when I connected the PS2 to an SD screen.
