Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

Does Gnome 3 run? Cinnamon and Gnome 3 share much of the same underlying code, so if Gnome 3 won't run on its own in all its, um, "glory", Cinnamon won't either.

................... now i feel infinitely dumb.....

ok, that aside, got it working but:
  • extensions aren't working (dl'd from the "spices" web, they appear active on the dconf editor, applets and themes working)
  • is there a better way to configure the touchpad? needing/wanting middle-click emulation with two finger tap (instead of right click emulation) and to have both edge and two-finger scroll.
  • any way to set a background slideshow?
  • my desktop is funny :P

edit:
well, the desktop fixed itself and got around xinput configuration (the arch wiki is a godsend)
any info on the other things?

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

Not sure which extension your talking about, but I know the weather one requires a panel applet be enabled as well. Also, when in doubt, restart cinnamon (Alt F2, type r, enter) and see if that helps.

Desktop slideshows still work, but you have to set the XML up manually. I don't remember everything off the top of my head.

Haven't tried this myself, but I read somewhere that you should have a working Gnome session before attempting to install Cinnamon.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

If you use the gnome-tweak-tool with cinnamon on Fedora 17 and the function "have file manager to handle the desktop" will broken the desktop-background as you see on the pic above.

This is a bug, but if you toggle between two desktops this will correcting the orientation!

cheers,
elias

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)

I'm assuming the bugs with Fedora 17 are due to the fact that the current version of Cinnamon was designed to work on what Mint is currently running ie. Gnome 3.2 and the previous version of GTK3 (it's probably more of a GTK3 issue than anything since these bugs are visual). I had the same glitches with the desktop and I had one where my "minimize,maximize" buttons were not visible. They were there and functional but I just couldn't see them. I've since gone back to F16. I would recommend Cinnamon users do the same until Linux Mint upgrades Cinnamon to work with the new versions of both.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnome-shell)

I have updated the repo for both f16 & f17, here's the changelog

Quote:
%changelog
* Mon May 28 2012 Leigh Scott <leigh123linux@fedoraproject.org> - 1.4.0-5.UP1
- Silence glib-compile-schemas scriplets
- fix firefox patch for f17
- fix power applet for f16

* Mon May 28 2012 Leigh Scott <leigh123linux@fedoraproject.org> - 1.4.0-4.UP1
- add notification patch

* Mon May 28 2012 Leigh Scott <leigh123linux@fedoraproject.org> - 1.4.0-3.UP1
- change %%define to %%global
- fix files listed twice in %%files section
- version patches
- remove %%config from files (gnome-shell and gnome-menus doesn't use them
for the equivalent files)
- drop login theme patch

* Sun May 27 2012 Leigh Scott <leigh123linux@fedoraproject.org> - 1.4.0-2.UP1
- add configure option so it compiles on F17
- fix release tag

* Sun May 27 2012 Leigh Scott <leigh123linux@fedoraproject.org> - 1.4.0-1.UP1
- update to 1.4.0.UP1-1

The F17 cinnamon package requires a downgrade of muffin package to work (you need to downgrade from muffin-1.0.4)

Code:
muffin-1.0.3-2.fc17

I believe the f17 update addresses this issue

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...&postcount=486

and this issue for both f16 & f17

https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/233

I based the patch on rat4's branch, for more details please read this

http://scott.cm/skype-auto-popup-with-cinnamon/

Please report regressions and feedback here

@Catastrophe - Are you getting the "Oh no! Something went wrong..." message when you reboot, and before you get the GDM (or KDM) login box? I got the latter problem recently (even though I already had GNOME Shell and KDE installed), but dropping to a terminal and entering the following commands got me up and running again:

Code:
systemctl stop prefdm.service
yum reinstall gnome-desktop
yum reinstall gnome-shell
systemctl start prefdm.service

@Elias - yep, I'm seeing that too on Fedora 17 64-bit. Same problem with both the Nouveau driver and the NVidia binary blob.

RE the Coverflow Cinnamon applet - same here on Fedora 17 64-bit. Same applet works fine though on Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit so not sure what the problem is...

Today's update has broken something on my desktop - can't see the taskbar.

rpm -q muffin cinnamon
muffin-1.0.4-0.2.fc17.x86_64
cinnamon-1.4.0-5.UP1.fc17.x86_64
