Ping Local Network Hostnames - Fedora 16

I thought that setting the hostname of a computer to LAPTOP would enable me to do ping LAPTOP from another computer, but it says hostname not found. Do I need to use DHCP or DNS? How do I set it up? Is there a ncurses-based configuration for whatever I need?

If your "other computer" that you're trying to ping from is Linux, then add an entry to its /etc/hosts file:

ip_address        LAPTOP

Of course, you'll need to know what the network ip address is for the LAPTOP machine.
