Linux Mint 13 “Maya” RC released!

Quote:
Available in two editions, Linux Mint 13 features the choice between a productive, stable and mature MATE 1.2 desktop and the brand new modern-looking and exciting Cinnamon 1.4. These two desktops are among the best available, they’re perfectly integrated within Linux Mint and represent great alternatives to Gnome 2 users. Linux Mint 13 is also an LTS (Long Term Support) release and it will be supported until April 2017.

Well, unlike the previous, including the very recent Debian Edition, this one seems to play nicely with my Ivy Bridge Intel graphics card.

I snagged the Cinnamon version and will give it a spin on LiveUSB...

I got Mate. I can't really tell the difference as I'll mainly use a terminal to run mplayer and things like that--anytime I'm using something for a lot of real work, I find that, for me, I do better when I stick to a *box or tiling type window manager.

I wasn't really sure which to get. As far as my limited knowledge goes Mate is a fork of Gnome 2 and Cinnamon is built on Gnome 3. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, we've got both MATE and Cinnamon on Fedora with Gnome3, so I'd bet both are built on Gnome3.

Edit & Correction: From our Guide, MATE is a Gnome2 fork.

Cinnamon looks interesting... Now, do I replace Kubuntu on my Thinkpad with it or leave it well alone!!!

Wayne, you're right: MATÉ is a continuation of the old GNOME 2 code-base, while Cinnamon is a fork of GNOME Shell and Mutter (but keeping the rest of GNOME 3 more-or-less vanilla) which follows a more traditional desktop interface.

IIRC, Cinnamon forked Mutter into Muffin.

IMO they should replace gnome shell with cinnamon in Fedora as well as the default DE.

No, they should replace GNOME Shell with Window Maker as the default!
