Fedora 16 requires 768 Mb memory to install [?]
hi,
I want to install Fedora 16 LXDE on my old Acer Aspire 1640. it only has 512 Mb of RAM. again the installer complains having not enough RAM on board, just like it was with Fedora 15. I use the LiveUSB.
besides more memory, staying with F14 etc,
is there a solution installing Fedora 16 LXDE with only 512Mb memory?
TIA, Meine

Re: Fedora 16 requires 768 Mb memory to install [?]
Yes, and no. The Anaconda installer requires at least 640 MB. There is a thread on the board somewhere that says how to adjust to this. I was able to get around it with a laptop I had with 512 MB by installing XFCE F14, and then using the YUM upgrade method to upgrade to XFCE F15. I've since installed Ubuntu 11.10 on that laptop.

[SOLVED] Re: Fedora 16 requires 768 Mb memory to install [?]
I tried installing Fedora 16 using the boot.iso file but even that way Anaconda needs more than 512Mb RAM. I choose to install F14 LXDE instead although it is EOL.

Allthough its solved already, did you try the live media of lxde either F15 or F16?
My experience tells me, that live media doesnt need as much ram to install as DvD- or netinstall medias.

tried live media -- they run normally. when I choose "Install to Hard Disk" the memory complaints showed up.
for the old acer laptop with 512Mb RAM I reinstalled Fedora 14 LXDE. for the experiment I tried to install Linux Mint LXDE but both the installation CD and Live USB gave strange errors and did not come to a proper install.
For my Acer AspireOne I added 1 Mb RAM and flawlessly installed Fedora 16 LXDE. for some 30 euro's Iḿ able to run my favourite distro in coming years...

Re: Fedora 16 requires 768 Mb memory to install [?]
I have upgraded from Fedora-14 as well. But what about a DVD image? Is it possible to install only base system with it? Does it need as much RAM as LiveCD/USB one?

Re: Fedora 16 requires 768 Mb memory to install [?]
Have you enabled a swap partition?
I thought to have read somewhere in this forum that due to the lack of ram.. something around 256 mb, but a large enough swap, in that case i'd suggest a 2gb swap at least , he were able to use anaconda too.
However, dont the dvd support textual install, or even the live media?
gotta check that now
EDIT:
live media doesnt.

I put the DVD on a USB stick. it mounts well but here also the Anaconda installer needs about 700-somewhat Mb RAM.

I tried to make a default install on the 512 RAM box, so that includes a /swap. didn't make a difference though...
text install of the DVD and LiveUSB I didn't try. using the boot.iso is text install by default and here Anaconda wanted some more than 700Mb.

You might be able to install 32-bit Fedora 16 using the hack from post #4 in this thread:

I couldn't install Fedora-14 from LiveUSB, the same was with a DVD image and Anaconda suggested to install in text mode which did the trick. But text mode installation is lacking many functions (disk encryption and others) so it's not the best way out.

Re: Fedora 16 requires 768 Mb memory to install [?]
It's easy to install live media on a machine with lower system requirements.
You edit /usr/sbin/anaconda and find the line needed_ram, and change it to:
needed_ram = 0
As far as upgrades go, you can either do a yum method or what I do, which is just shove the drive in a machine with more RAM, upgrade, and put it back in the original.

Bendib:
Setting needed_ram = 0 worked like a charm on a little 512MB machine I rescued from the trash. Thanks!
