Twin monitors with Fedora

I have an ancient Dell Dimension 4600 which I have resurrected as general utility PC for the household.

I have various PC bits lying around and I decided to see if I could get it to work with twin monitors. The Dell will only accept AGP video cards but I managed to salvage a GeForce 7600GS from a scrap PC. I fitted it in the Dell and connected the two totally different monitors (unbranded 1280 x 1024 and a Dell 1024 x 768).

I booted up into Windows XP first and both monitors worked but neither at correct resolution. I did a search online and managed to download the driver package for the 7600. After running the driver installation software I had to reboot. After reboot it ran a setup programme that allowed me to setup both monitors to different resolutions. Overall it took about 30 minutes to set up the software, not too bad and I have a very nice double desktop.

Then I thought I would face the challenge of setting it up in Fedora. Imagine my disappointment when after booting into Fedora 16 everything just worked!

There was absolutely nothing I needed to do! It had selected the correct resolution for each monitor before I even got to the KDE log in screen. No downloading drivers, no configuring files, not even a reboot! Where is the challenge in that?

I know. It is soooo disgusting when you're all whetted up for a big challenge ... and everything just slips into place. <....>

So ... just fetch some obscure USB Dlink wireless dongle from a yard sale somewhere, and try to get it working with ndiswrapper ... and that should give your frustration mill something to chew on for a while. <....>

The wireless dongle sounds like a good idea. I have just bought an HP Photosmart 5510 3 in 1 and had high hopes the scanner would not work, but it does.

However, I have an ongoing issue trying to access my network drive so that keeps me amused.
