In that case, I'm really not sure. I haven't had to do this for, literally, 4 years. I would try the LCD panel. I'm not sure why it's not getting an address from the router, as far as I could tell from the bit of googling I did, it should have.

Well, 192.168.1.111 is the IP address I assigned to my HP Laserjet 4 Plus, so it wasn't meant for you to use that same IP address; use the one you assign to your printer. It looks like you're having some trouble assigning that IP address. From your other posts it appears that your router's address is 192.168.1.1. So definitely do not use that as your printer's address; pick something in the 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 range that isn't being used. You should be able to do that through the printer's control panel (that's how I did mine). See the bottom of this page for how to do it via the panel (or through telnet).

Thanks much for that update. If I understand correctly, the first 3 sets of numbers need to be the same as the router, and the 4th set needs to be different.
router - 192.168.1.1
printer- 192.168.1.111 to 192.168.1.254 ... I'm selecting 192.168.1.211

I changed the IP in printer properties, tested with a cold restart, but the printer IP went back to 192.0.0.192 again.
The manual doesn't show a way to change the printer IP in the printer control panel.
The network screen on the laserjet 4M plus does not have the choices shown in either of the links.

I found this on a link "If the DHCP option is on, the printer will pick up an IP address automatically.
Turning that option off will allow you to set your own IP address."
There is no DHCP option, but maybe there's another option that does the same thing.

Update: Yes! It's called BOOTP. I'm setting the IP now, then will post the steps and results.

Thanks to Joel for posting the following solution at this link on June 11, 2003.

Press and hold the ONLINE button while powering on the printer.
"08 Cold Reset" will be displayed and you can release the ONLINE button.
Wait for aprox. 5 minutes and then configure the Jetdirect through the front panel.

Press MENU, repeatedly, until one of the following messages appears on the control panel:
MIO MENU
Press ITEM. CFG NETWORK=NO* will appear.
Press the PLUS button once. CFG NETWORK=YES* will appear.
Press ENTER or SELECT.

Press ITEM repeatedly until CFG TCP/IP=NO* appears.
Press the PLUS button. CFG TCP/IP=YES* will appear.
Press ENTER or SELECT.

Press ITEM until BOOTP=YES* appears.
Press the PLUS button. BOOTP=NO will appear.
Press ENTER or SELECT.

(Note: When using BootP or DHCP, keep the setting BOOTP=YES*.
The BootP or DHCP server will configure the TCP/IP parameters on the HP Jetdirect.
No other TCP/IP configuring is necessary.) -- I ignored this part.

Press ITEM. IP BYTE 1 = (value) will appear. -- In my case this was 192.
Press the PLUS button until the value of the first byte of the IP address appears on the control-panel display.
By pressing SHIFT and the PLUS button, the value will decrease.
Press ENTER or SELECT.

Press ITEM to continue. Repeat Steps 11-13 to configure the remaining bytes of the IP address.
For me the bytes were:
1- 192
2- 168
3- 1
4- 211

(Repeat Steps 11-13 to configure the subnet mask bytes (SM BYTE 1=),
syslog server IP address (LG BYTE 1=), default gateway (GW BYTE 1=), and timeout (TIMEOUT=).) -- I ignored this part.
The printer works with the Gateway at 0.0.0.0 but did not work when set at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.211.
I'm not sure if this gateway setting is correct.

Press ONLINE. Print a self-test page to verify the IP settings.
If the test page does not show the correct settings, power cycle the printer and reprint the test page.

The self test page printed fine from applications > administration > printing > printer properties.
This is the first time this printer has worked for quite a few years! Thanks again, very much for your great suggestions!
