fedora 16 (64) - where is printer configuration tool
I have looked in all the menus and cannot find anywhere to configure printers. It was easy to find in fedora 14 but I sure don't see it. If this is an option to installation, I thought I chose printing.
If it is an option I need to add, how do I add this item to my menus? (what software to choose???)
---------- Post added at 01:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:32 PM ----------
For the record, I could not find anything anywhere using Cinnamon. I logged out and re-login'd into Gnome. I found printers under my name -> system settings. I chose that and it said "I'm sorry this tool is not available" (those are NOT the exact words) but they are close enough.
So how do I get this tool off the release DVD or Live CD and install it? Or can I yum it in.

I am not sure if this is what you mean - but does system-config-printer not work? Also, there would be a "Printing" menu and a "Printers" menu. I believe printing would allow you add printers, etc.

Re: fedora 16 (64) - where is printer configuration tool
Hello rholme
As "nonamedotc" said, the tool for printing is "system-config-printer" and you can get it with:
Code:
yum install system-config-printer
It certainly isn't installed by default on my installation from a KDE liveCD.
You can further check if it is installed by running the system-config-printer part of the command from the command line.
You should also be able to set up printers in the CUPS web interface:
Code:
http://localhost:631
If the configuration tool isn't installed, don't be surprised if other bits aren't installed as well.
Try the configuration and post back if you have problems.

Re: fedora 16 (64) - where is printer configuration tool
HMMMM - I stumbled across that yum command and had done it earlier. I then logged out and could not find the "add printer" item in the menu under "printers" as it should be.
I don't mind using the command line interface but thought it would appear in the menus.
I will see if I can find a cooman line way to make the printer tomorrow.

OK, the problem before was that I did not reboot the machine. It works fine. Thanks.

Hello rholme
Just curious, but what desktop are you using?
Certainly KDE updates its menu structure on the fly and doesn't need rebooting.

I am curious too! GNOME, in my experience, does not need reboot either!

Cinnamon does not show system-settings anywhere
so I used Gnome and had to reboot to see the corrected printers (add one as opposed to "this ain't here ..."

Try actually looking in system tools/ system settings or preferences/ printers with your eyes open

Re: fedora 16 (64) - where is printer configuration tool
all of a sudden (after months of working), my printer software stopped printing!
jobs stacked up in the queue
I ran system-config-printer and instead of stopping at the big yellow triangle, it let me proceed and re-install at least the printer
but NOT the FAX.. I had to give my password 3-4 times and that was useless
as far as I am concerned, HPLIP needs work.
Since I have dual boot, I transferred the file to be printed to Windows XP Prof and printed it using MS Word.
Once I bragged on Linux printing but no more.

Running F16 (x64) Gnome 3: Applications > All > Printing
Really easy to access my network printer, I accepted the default settings presented by the Printing application. And then I could print from my notebook (F16 x64).
Not sure what was causing you trouble and the Printing application was installed by default using the F16 x64 live cd

Re: fedora 16 (64) - where is printer configuration tool
bbfuller: thanks so much, system-config-printer worked for me to set the options on my HP 2420DN. The standard Printer application didn't find the duplex option nor the increased printer memory. On the good side, Printer found the HP almost instantaneously, and installed the appropriate driver almost as quickly. Why the options page requires a separate application puzzles me.
