Canon Camera USB connection

How can I get Fedora 16 to allow me to download the photos off my canon camera. Exact model is Canon G10 if that helps any.

Just connect the camera to your computer and see what happens:

tail -f /var/log/messages

Try to configure the usb connection in your camera as "computer" rather than "printer".

And if everthing else fails just put the memory card into a card reader which might be faster anyways ;-)

AFAIK most Canon cameras have two modes of connection:

MTP -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol

UMS -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_mas...e_device_class

You want UMS -- this is a camera setting.

Then plug it in and treat it as a normal storage device.
(I think you may need to preserver the directory structure)

I have a very similar problem, but with a PowerShot G6.

This camera used to work with no problems. I would plug the device in and it would be recognized and its storage mounted. However now the device is recognized, but nothing gets mounted, and applications can't find it.

Any comments?

Eliminate the obvious first: try a different USB port (I got once something like this on a faulty usb)

Configure the usb port inside your camera as usb mass storage device and not MTP or printer.

Connect the camera to an usb port which is directly connected to your motherboard or notebook and don't use any hubs.

If everything else fails you can just put the memory card into a card reader ;-)

This is the simplest solution; also, the readers are fairly cheap and are able to read several types of card.

lol, but linux geeks will always try to make something work with their system first before using the easier solution
