F16 Configured network printer configuration is lost after crash or reboot

Any ideas will be helpful.

My home network printer configuration dissapears periodically.

I am using Fedora 16, fresh install after using F13 for 2 years - no printer issues.

I have a number of my company's printers defined [5] using a custom interface to CUPS, and these were installed and their configuration remain. I have a networked home laser printer that I have now re-installed 3 times now. I had the printer prior to my F13 installation and I had no problems with F13 and printing.

When configured the printer works fine. The configuration of the printer also works fine. It is just that on 3 occassions when I have attempted to print at home, the printer definition was lost.

When I loose my printer configuration ONLY my home networked printer configuration is lost. The first time the configuration was lost, I was at a loss and wondered if I did configure it at all. When the configuration was lost the 2nd and 3rd times I started to get worried. At each instance ALL the company defined printer configuration still remain in tact.

I do not print very much from the home printer, but my F16 has locked up about 5-6 times and I was forced to power down, but this is still strange.

Company printer URI:-
ipselect://xemeaprt25.megacenter.de.ibm.com:7050/gbbaslcq

My home printer URI:- [HP Deskjet protocol]
socket://192.168.0.52:9100

I have now looked in the /etc/cups/lpp and I see my printer defined 6 times, with different names etc.

I do not have the issue of dissappearing, but when I reboot my system (F16 64-bit) I get this message Processing... Not connected. I remove my printer configuration, re-configure, and then print. I have to do this every reboot. I am curious about any ideas on this too? And my network printer sets at the same address on my home network, so not sure why it is not recognised on reboot

When I reconfigure, it is the same information input-ed as before?

Unhappy Re: F16 Configured network printer configuration is lost after crash or reboot

I am now re-phrasing the statement as the local printers are now not being reported as configured.

I have been configuring a CUPS-PDF printer, to allow any application to print to a PDF output file and part of the configuration is to select a pre-defined CUPS printer definition *.ppd file.

When I look at the /etc/cups/ppd/ I see five separate configuration .ppd files for my local printer. Now I can specify a pre-existing *.ppf file in the /etc/cups/ppd/ directory and my printer is back up and running.

Now both my CUPS-PDF and local defined printers are not being displayed in the panel, as the definitions are in the correct location:-

[root@naipaulpc cups]# cd ppd ; ls -l

-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 7884 Feb 19 13:09 PostScript.ppd

I see some error messages in /var/log/cups directory, but I see messages for all the network printers also, and they are also there.

Re: F16 Configured network printer configuration is lost after crash or reboot

Just an update,

my print issue may be caused by the network printer sleeping and not waking in a timely manner.

I sent a file to print, had same information of file sent - not connected, then about a minute later, the file printed. I immediately tested another file, which printed immediately. So maybe a wake issue with my printer

And I am sorry TrickyHarry, I do not have helpful ideas for your printer problems. I am curious though if you checked out this F16 Public Service Announcement, and if it is related to your printer troubles?
