F14 Crash: System Hangs, Keyboard Doesn't Responod, Hard Reset Only?
Hi Everyone:
I have recently started using Fedora 14. However, I am unable to figure out that why my system keeps on crashing whenever I play some video using any media player. Moreover, system also hangs whenever I do an image search on Google images. Everythings hangs, keyboard does not respond, although cursor can be moved around but clicking does not do anything, and in the end i have no option but to do a HARD RESET.
I have searched internet for possible solutions but all in vain. Can anybody help me out in this regard?
I am quite new to linux, so kindly keep it simple.
Regards,

Re: F14 Crash: System Hangs, Keyboard Doesn't Responod, Hard Reset Only?
Depends on the nature of the crash. Is it an application abort (segfault usually), or a kernel panic (can be caused by segfault)?
In the segfault aborts are usually cause by either programming error or memory failure. I suggest running memtest for a day to see.
Sometimes segfaults can be caused by disk errors (such as swap), but usually this would also be accompanied by a disk error report (/var/log/messages).
I did have one system that had intermittent errors until I increased the memory wait time (borderline memory, suspected from vendor notes saying the motherboard called for high quality memory... my memory was good quality, but not quite "good enough").

Re: F14 Crash: System Hangs, Keyboard Doesn't Responod, Hard Reset Only?
Thanks for taking time to reply. I have recently bought this Intel I3 system with single 4 GB memory chip on Intel's DH61WW mother board. I have not yet installed any external graphics card. I appreciate your recommendation for running a memory test. Can you elaborate a bit more as how to do it?
Do you think it could be problem related to some graphics driver? Does any log file created whenever my system crash?

Re: F14 Crash: System Hangs, Keyboard Doesn't Responod, Hard Reset Only?
memtest is a standalone program running in real mode - it has a simple menu presentation. Testing memory can take a couple of hours.
It is possible that a video driver has bugs causing this, but running video is also a bit of a memory pig with lots of caching going on.
To eliminate the video driver usually requires an alternate card...
