gnome-shell themes
hi,
i just installed yesterday and cant switch the gnome-shell themes through gnome-tweak-tool
the gnome-tweak-tool is up to date
tweak_shell.py has the correct github link
i moved my themes to both /usr/share/themes and ~/.themes
i did yum install gnome-shell-themes*
my friend it on his near identical computer jsut fine a week ago with the exact same instructions as here
http://www.if-not-true-then-false.co...mes-on-fedora/
but nothing seems to be working for me
i'm loving fedora right now but this is a deal breaker for me, the generic gnome-shell is just too unwieldy for day to day use
i should also mention that the GTK+ and Window theme went through just fine and i'm able to slelect it from the gnome-tweak-tool

Did anything really get installed with this? I do not have any packages from the repository. Are you sure you have the user theme extension installed?
This is what I get -
Code:
yum list gnome-shell-themes*
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Error: No matching Packages to list
Is it possible that the themes are not compatible with GNOME 3.2? There are many themes that will work with GNOME 3.0 only.

Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Package gnome-shell-theme-elementary-3.4-1.fc16.noarch already installed and latest versione gnome-shell themes through gnome-tweak-tool
the gnome-tweak-tool is up to date
tweak_shell.py has the correct github link
i moved my themes to both /usr/share/themes and ~/.themes
Package gnome-shell-theme-gaia-1.0-2.fc16.noarch already installed and latest version
Package gnome-shell-theme-smooth-inset-3.2-2.fc16.noarch already installed and latest version
Package gnome-shell-theme-atolm-3.2-2.fc16.noarch already installed and latest version
Package gnome-shell-theme-ambiance-1.0-3.fc16.noarch already installed and latest version
Package gnome-shell-theme-dark-glass-1.0-2.fc16.noarch already installed and latest version

1. install fedora
2. install updates
3. install gnome tweak
4. install gnome-shell-theme* and move the theme i want indo /usr/share/theme
5. alt + f2 -> r
6. see shell still not themeable
7. rip hair out in fustration

Re: gnome-shell themes
Try moving your themes to /usr/share/gnome-shell folder. That's where all my themes are which are working fine.

EDIT: Although, if you move your themes to ~/.themes, it should work. Hmmm. Strange!

Re: gnome-shell themes
tried it, sitll not working....
yum installed the themes in /usr/share/themes/[themename]/gnome-shell/[them data]
how would i go about replacing the original theme manually? i.e file by file?
i already dropped the gnome-shell.css into the assets folder and moved it to /usr/share/gnome-shell and it *half works, and by that i mean the css seems to work but the icons dont...

Honestly, I have never installed themes using yum. I follow one of the two methods below.
- Use GNOME tweak tool to install the theme - if possible. This will put the theme in ~/.themes folder and I have been able to select what I want.
- Alternatively, I copy the theme folders to /usr/share/gnome-shell/. Rename the 'theme' folder to 'adwaita'. Then, I have renamed "my_new_theme_folder" as "theme". Restarting GNOME shell has the new theme. Now, this is a pain if the theme needs to be changed often. But, it is possible.
There might be some other easier way. If there is one, I do not know of it. Hope this helps.

Why do you need livecd? Are you unable to login to GNOME?
O.K. This is what I did. Downloaded the zip file from deviantart, installed the theme using gnome-tweak-tool. I have the theme in my ~/.themes folder.
I am not at my F17 machine right now. But, the other theme I use - Elegance - works as I have described above.

I don't think it should be this hard. I am wondering if I am not understanding your problem correctly!!

Re: gnome-shell themes
Why is your file in /lib/python2.7 .... Shouldn't it be here - /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/gtweak/tweaks/tweak_shell.py?
I don't even have a python2.7 in /lib!

Re: gnome-shell themes
Um, I may have overlooked this but you need gnome-shell-extension-user-theme package to switch the shell theme. Once you install that package logout and log back in and you should be able to change the shell theme.
I'd restore everything back to the way it is and try doing it all with that extension, should work just fine.

Re: gnome-shell themes
/usr/lib and /lib are sys linked iirc
hrm the extension thing might actually be it...
GNOME shell theme selector extension is disabled with no option of re-enabling it, the yellow bubble thing again
user-themes-extensions was loaded and enabled from install gnome-extension*
edit: ahha! okay edidted the metadata.json file, going to try it out :-P
worked!
