Lenovo EasyCamera kernel crash

Hi, I hope someone can help me here.

If I boot into kernel 3.1.0-7.fc16.x86_64 the webcam in my laptop works. When I boot into later kernels (3.3.0-4.fc16.x86_64, 3.3.0-8.fc16.x86_64) than that when I try to use my webcam the whole system freezes. At this point nothing is possible at all until a forced reboot.

The problem is that I can't run anything to diagnose the problem because the system is totally frozen. Is there anything I can do to try and diagnose it? It appears nothing is written to /var/log/messages while the system is frozen. Is there anything I can do to try to narrow down the problem? I have been using a few different programs to test the webcam, mplayer, vlc, googletalk plugin (with chrome & firefox), kamoso. All with the same result.

Re: Lenovo EasyCamera kernel crash

I have exactly the same issue if I move from 3.2 kernels to 3.3.. If there's anyhting I can share that would help solve the problem, please let me know.

Cheers!

EDIT - Just got 3.3.1-2.fc16 and the webcam is still broken.

Re: Lenovo EasyCamera kernel crash

Has anything been resolved on this?

I just got a web camera for my laptop and I am experiencing nearly the same issue.

Skype works for a while and then freezes the machine. All other attempts immediately freeze the machine.

I'm running an up-to-date Fedora 16.

Exactly the same Problem here with Y570 box.
Linux computing 3.3.8-1.fc16.i686.PAE #1 SMP Mon Jun 4 21:10:09 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Does your camera work with cheers? Mine is not working with that. For a long time I used to believe it that this camera is brocken until today I find it works well with tencent QQ by accident.
And what software do you use when you want to take photo with it?
No cheese, no digikam.

Spending hours searching for working software, I now find this command works for me.
vlc v4l2:///dev/video0
Trying more later.

Re: Lenovo EasyCamera kernel crash

Create a file named uvcvideo.conf in the /etc/modprobe.d/ directory.

In the file place this line:

options uvcvideo nodrop=1

Save the file and then execute the following:

modprobe -r uvcvideo
modprobe uvcvideo

After that give the camera a try and see how it does.
