slow software update. need alternative

H
I m new to fedora though i've tried ubuntu before.
I have some issues when installing updates. it takes forever to download the softwares and so its never completed and nothing is installed. My net connection is not slow. I am on a broadband LAN. Is there alternatives that i can do to select only some updattes( not from GUI because it takes a long time to untick the update in software update. I have 422 updates ! u know what i mean. sometime the updates fail with something like it cannot install the updates or somthing like that. can i update through the terminal limiting it to selective number of updates at a time?
Any suggestion will be appreciated.
