F16 Panics on Boot After Kernel Update (3.2.9-1)

I'm on F16 x86-64 and an updated kernel will not start. The I can still boot 3.2.7-1 no issues.

When it panics, I get some readout but it doesn't always say the same thing (multiple tries of fury). I'll take some pics and post.

Is there a way to either get a better readout to a file/log or reinstall kernel?

yum reinstall kernel-headers
Does not seem to have any effect.

Help would be appreciated.

Edit: It is being consistent. When the kernel panics, I panic.

Here is the readout after the attempted boot. Is anyone else having this issue?

Sorry for the image quality and size.

If you download rpm pakage of kernel, kernel-headers and kernel- devel

and

try rpm to install these rpm pakages. may be this can solve your problem.

Look at the boot menu. You can press 'e' to edit the menu so that you can see what it contains. Are there any major differences between the kernel that will boot and the kernel that won't boot, other than the kernel version numbers?

Re: F16 Panics on Boot After Kernel Update (3.2.9-1)

I'm having exactly the same issue as Seather. However, I can eventually boot the new kernel after a few tries. The problem occured after updating the system.
From what I was able to notice, the panic message was: kernel panic: not syncing, and then the same output as in the image above.
I'm on a fresh fedora installation, the first thing I did after installing the system was the update.
Any solutions?

Re: F16 Panics on Boot After Kernel Update (3.2.9-1)

Sorry it took so long to respond.

I tried installing from rpms and ended up deleting all the kernels... (Because I'm smart)

Because nothing on the system was critical, I figured a reinstall would fix it. Still no luck when I upgrade from 3.1.0-7 to 3.2.9-1.

I've checked the grub boot and I see no difference between the now two kernels on the menu. I hope this doesn't happen to me immediately in F17.

I have tried, thank you but, it ended in sadface. Does anyone know where I can find older rpm packages? Say, 3.2.7 kernel rpms?

Staying on topic, can anyone make heads or tails of the output?

I truly hope that this issue doesn't continue in the release of FC17 or that hardware is getting abandoned.

My spec, if it helps, is:
Dell Studio XPS 1340
Intel Core 2 Duo P9600 @ 2.66GHz
GeForce 9200M GS + GeForce 9400M G (Strange hybrid sli. It's worked fine thus far.)
128GB SSD
4GB DDR3

Thank you.

Re: F16 Panics on Boot After Kernel Update (3.2.9-1)

Still having an issue with any kernel above 3.2.7.

I was able to install the 3.2.7 kernel, dev and headers from an rpm site but, I still get this issue starting with 3.2.9 and still in 3.2.10.

Where can I find the major changes in the kernel in those updates?

EDIT:
I've noticed this issue popping up in the Arch Forums: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1075201

I'll try that and report back here. If I don't get a response from anyone, no worries, I'll keep posting my resolutions in the hope It'll solve someone else's issue with a minimal google search.

Exact same issue as you with the new kernel.

I also tried what was posted here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1075201

Code:
cp /etc/modprobe.d/* /lib/modprobe.d
and
echo blacklist video >> /etc/modprobe.d/video.conf
Still no luck. I'll submit a bug report.

Re: F16 Panics on Boot After Kernel Update (3.2.9-1)

I am working with Linux and Windows XP on 2 separate hard disks (I can choose on boot my OS).
I have always connected a TV BOX (USB 2.0) to my computer.
The TV BOX is working very good on Windows XP.
My Linux OS is the Fedora 16 KDE x86_64.
Fedora could not recognize the tv box but I had not any other problems with the OS.
Recently I got the official fedora updates (new kernel 3.3.0-8).
This kernel could recognise the usb tv box but, I could not find a way to use it.

Anyway , I noticed some unusual problems with the new kernel :
- Τhe boot time was very longer.
- Very often I could not use my keyboard and my mouse ον start up. I could not press any key to login..... (It is a usb keyboard - mouse). I had to restart the PC again and again....
- There was a persistent kernel bug reported to me very often by the ABRT immediately after login.
- During shutting off there was a bug (CPU #1 stall 22 sec). I had to press the power button of the PC steadily on order to shut off.

So, I decided to disconnect the tvbox of the usb port .
After this, all the above problems were disappeared.

I try to help.
Thanks a lot.

Re: F16 Panics on Boot After Kernel Update (3.2.9-1)

I found out that the problem is in ite-cir driver
a workaround is to blacklist ite-cir module, add this to end of kernel line in /boot/grub2/grub.cfg:
modprobe.blacklist=ite-cir

I can confirm this but, I also have a more global solution:

Code:
su -
sudo echo "blacklist ite_cir" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ite-cir.conf
This will blacklist for every kernel.

Code:
$ uname -r
3.3.1-5.fc16.x86_64
EDIT:
For those of you who are wondering what ite_cir is, it's the infrared receiver on the front of the laptop that I doubt none of us use.
Also, confirmed working on 3.3.2-1.fc16.x86_64.

Enjoy!
