Question How to install Skype on Fedora 16 (64-bit) ?

I am a Linux rookie. I am using Fedora 16 (64-bit) with the Gnome 3 interface and am trying to get Skype working. I tried:

ATTEMPT #1
Download 'Skype-2.2.0.35-fedora.i586.rpm' from the Skype website.
$ rpm -i Skype-2.2.0.35-fedora.i586.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libXScrnSaver is needed by skype-2.2.0.35-fc10.i586
qt >= 4.4 is needed by skype-2.2.0.35-fc10.i586
qt-x11 >= 4.4 is needed by skype-2.2.0.35-fc10.i586

ATTEMPT #2
$ yum localinstall --nogpgcheck skype-2.2.0.35-fedora.i586.rpm

As I do this, the install appears to go through. The Skype icon appears in Gnome but when I click on it, nothing happens. Thus I did

$ yum remove skype

-----

I am assuming that the RPM Skype 2.2 I downloaded is 32-bit and I need to install some sort of dependency before I can get it to work with Fedora 16 X64?

There is a guide on the Kororaa forum that covers installing Skype and also shows how to find what is missing. https://kororaa.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=236

It might be worth your while installing Autoplus and letting that do the donkey work for you.

http://www.dnmouse.org/autoten/

I've not used it to do Skype, but it's done everything I've asked it to flawlessly. Call it an interim solution until someone can offer something a bit more in-depth

Re: How to install Skype on Fedora 16 (64-bit) ?

Thank you for your valuable tips Ozjd & Bazu!

I installed Autoplus as Bazu suggested. Autoplus installed Skype 2.1 beta and all the necessary dependencies. I used Autoplus to uninstall Skype 2.1 beta and downloaded Skype 2.2 beta from the official website. From there, it was a simple matter of:
rpm -i skype-2.2.0.35-fedora.i586.rpm

Skype 2.2 beta was installed and it ran properly

Actually you could do
Code:
yum install ./skype-filename.rpm
yum automatically recognize the dependencies and install them all.
It worked for me a hundreds of times.

This generally means you do not have the required 32-bit libraries installed for skype to function. I would recommend using Autoplus to install skype. Or did you use Autoplus and still got this message?

You can. It will pull in 32 bit libraries but it works.

Agreed it is usually best to use the 64 bit version, when it exists, but I was just pointing out your general statement was wrong.

Re: How to install Skype on Fedora 16 (64-bit) ?

With the latest version ( 4.0.0.8 ) I just needed to

1) download the rpm
2) install the rpm (skype now works, but not the audio)
3) sudo yum install pulseaudio-libs.i686

That was all

This was done from a fresh Fedora17 installation
