ATI 4850 Fedora 15 Freeze

I have just installed Fedora 15. This is my second install. The other install was dual booted with windows 7. I had a server setup on it, install some editors, ftp client, etc. After a bit, it started to freeze up for a bit but mouse would still be usable. After a bit, the system would come back to me. I am curious, is my ATI 4850 video card to blame on this? I am on the gnome3 and imagine it would take up some resources and not sure if I need to install the 4850 driver. Thanks for any help.

Re: ATI 4850 Fedora 15 Freeze

I have a similar problem but with KDE on F15. I currently have an ATI HD3650 installed. The difference is that my mouse pointer also becomes unresponsive along with the keyboard. I had run into a thread that suggested diabling Desktop Effects and that seemed to fix it for a couple of days and then today it started again. When it happens if I am playing music tracks it'll keep on going until the track ends and does not go to the next track. One time I was printing a 200 page document and the printer finished the document and then stopped while everything else was unresponsive.

Today I ran into another thread that indicates installing Catalyst and then blacklisting radeon, radeonhd fixed it for him (Fedora 15 freezes with ATI Catalyst), the subject line is misleading, I first thought the problem was Catalyst until I actually read the thread.

Re: ATI 4850 Fedora 15 Freeze

My freeze problems are solved by removing frame buffer access in the kernel. My ATI card
which is supported by the ATI Radeon driver hangs at random times with a default up to date
kernel. I downloaded the kernel source and configured it without Frame Buffer access. Now
works great.

+1 My crashes in F16 after installing AMD drivers only happens when I'm running the Gnome 3 session. hmm
