Question permanent front screen view of open apps in GNOME

i would like to configure my GNOME (in F16) to permanently display all open apps some place on the screen, bottom or top, doesn't matter. kind of like in MSFT bottom menu bar. the reason is that i want to make the application switch a one-click process rather than a two-click process. currently, i have to go to "Activities" in the top left and then pick the open app i want.

any suggestions how to do this?

thanks

How dare you say that the old one click way is more productive than the "New and Improved" two click way!

That has been one of the complaints in the new Gnome 3 shell, and I haven't seen a good way to get what you are wanting.

Re: permanent front screen view of open apps in GNOME

thanks, i do appreciate sarcasm

i yummed gconf-editor and am working to research whether there is a way to change some configuration to accomplish what i am trying to do.

the 2-click process is terrible indeed. it is one of those little ergonomic defficiencies that look like only an insignificant addition of effort required, however the frequency of it makes it add up to the point that you sense how much unnecessary time waste it accumulates.

i hope this issue gets resolved ASAP ... it is awful

Re: permanent front screen view of open apps in GNOME

I have been hoping it (along with some other issues) would get resolved ever since Gnome 3 shell was released, and it doesn't seem to be happening.

The problem is that they are trying to make a "one size fits all" desktop environment that works on phones, tablets, etc... but in the process are making things harder for desktop users.

And the lack of being able to configure things to get back some of the previous usability has been my major complaint with Gnome 3. A few of the things have worked their way in, but there is still a lot lacking.

There are some gnome shell extensions that help out some, though..

I just did a search on the extensions available in the fedora repo, and this may be one you might want to look at.

Code:
[root@tower20 network-scripts]# yum info gnome-shell-extension-dock
Loaded plugins: etckeeper, langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Available Packages
Name : gnome-shell-extension-dock
Arch : noarch
Version : 3.3.90
Release : 1.fc17
Size : 14 k
Repo : updates-testing
Summary : Shows a dock-style task switcher permanently
URL : http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Extensions
License : GPLv2+
Description : Shows a dock-style task switcher on the right side of the screen
            : permanently.
I haven't installed it or looked at it so don't know if it is what you are looking for or not.
