after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

Today I did yum update on my box. I hope I can get rid the annoying firefox crashing issue, but now it gets worse. I can not even watch a whole vidoe now on cbs.com. I did google search, and found all the solution does not work. Any suggestions?

WITH nspluginwrapper installed, I get such error msg on prompt, and the flash player just die.

(rpc_method_invoke_possible(plugin->connection))
*** NSPlugin Wrapper *** WARNING:(../src/npw-wrapper.c:2848):invoke_NPP_HandleEvent: assertion failed: (rpc_method_invoke_possible(plugin->connection))
*** NSPlugin Wrapper *** WARNING:(../src/npw-wrapper.c:2219):invoke_NPP_SetWindow: assertion failed: (rpc_method_invoke_possible(plugin->connection))
*** NSPlugin Wrapper *** WARNING:(../src/npw-wrapper.c:2848):invoke_NPP_HandleEvent: assertion failed: (rpc_method_invoke_possible(plugin->connection))
*** NSPlugin Wrapper *** WARNING:(../src/npw-wrapper.c:2219):invoke_NPP_SetWindow: assertion failed: (rpc_method_invoke_possible(plugin->connection))

So I removed nspluginwrapper, then restart firefox, after few seconds the flash just shows a crying faces and said adobe flash crashed, please reload.

Re: after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

# I have the exact same firefox version and flash-plugin versions
# They are x86_64 and work well together
# Do you have nspluginwrapper installed 1.4.4-3.fc16 (@updates) or 1.4.4-7.fc17 (rawhide)
# I know that gcc has been going through a major overhaul
# nspluginwrapper may have been temporarily broken

yum -y install fedora-release-rawhide # optional - enables rawhide repo
yum -y update nspluginwrapper --enablerepo=*

# Also have you installed all of these packages through yum?

---------- Post added at 03:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:47 AM ----------

# You could also try the gnash-plugin (open-source) instead of the flash-plugin
yum -y remove flash-plugin
yum -y remove nspluginwrapper

yum -y install gnash-plugin

Re: after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

Thanks EvilRedHorse .

1. I tried:
yum -y install fedora-release-rawhide # optional - enables rawhide repo
yum -y update nspluginwrapper --enablerepo=*
-- it trys to install a fc17 version of nspluginwrapper. And I get error:
unning rpm_check_debug
ERROR You need to update rpm to handle:
rpmlib(X-CheckUnifiedSystemdir) is needed by filesystem-3-2.fc17.i686
RPM needs to be updated
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
Your transaction was saved, rerun it with: yum load-transaction /tmp/yum_save_tx-2012-02-27-22-59DjnTef.yumtx

2. When I try to installl gnash. And I have gnash-plugin, when I tried espn.com, it still compains "You need to have the Adobe Flash Player 9 to view this content. Please click here to continue."

I can watch youtube video, but nothing else. How can I make sure gnash-plugin is in place? I googled search and no luck.

Re: after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

1) Open Firefox
2) Got to preferences
3) Select Applications Tab
4) In the Content Type column scroll down to Shockwave Flash file
5) Change "Action:Use Shockwave Flash" to "Action:Use Gnash SWF Viewer"
6) Restart Firefox
7) It seems that the default swf handler had not been changed. ESPN.com works now

8) You probably have the totem plugins installed they handle a lot of media in firefox
yum -y install totem totem-mozplugin totem-nautilus totem-pl-parser

9) I believe Fedora 15 is too far behind to jump to rawhide (essentially F17 Alpha), you would need to upgrade to Fedora 16 first.

I'm still having problems with some of the actionscript on the page.

Re: after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

EvilRedHorse, suggesting any member jump to Rawhide versions is not a good solution to problems. In fact, for all but the most advanced users, it's a good way to harm or destroy their system. You may be comfortable with it, but you must remember that these posts are read by all levels of users, from new users on up.

In short, find more normal solutions and don't come up with anything that enables rawhide. Thanks!

(From the Posting Rules):

When Answering Questions Do things the Fedora-way. There are always more than one solution to a problem, choose the one you think will be the easiest for the user. Automatic package installation (using YUM, PackageKit or Yumex) over manual installation. RPM over source. Where possible get people to use the official Fedora repositories and the related RPMFusion. They are of higher quality. Don't replace any Core packages and never instruct users to do anything that might break their system, this includes using --force and --nodeps when installing an RPM. Try to think as a newbie and choose the simplest solution.

Re: after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

bob, i agree, I also said it was optional but you are right it really should be avoided at all costs.

A full rawhide update will most likely crash your OS!

I'm stuck on this issue though, I can get the flash-plugin to work fine but shartz can't and the gnash-plugin can't handle the new actionscript and swf appropriately.

do you have any suggestions?

maybe a reinstall?

yum -y resinstall firefox nspluginwrapper flash-plugin

edit: gnash-plugin is still in development and will not work with some websites espn.go.com is on the list of not working(it's actually untriaged)

Re: after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

I've got no problem with FF on my F16 system after all the updates. Sure, you can look at Chrome and see if the problem persists as a workaround. You can remove it and reinstall, then jump to the Fedora Set-Up Guides (above) and let AutoPlus or EasyLife set up flash. (The good news there is that you can yell at Dangermouse if AutoTen borks it!)

It's sometimes fun to dig down and decode a problem, but when all you want to do is watch a news clip, sheesh!

Re: after yum update, firefox flash keeps crashing on fedora 15

Thanks a bunch, EvilRedHorse !
I am switched to gnash with firefox and so far it runs amazingly good. I open 2 ESPN tab, 2 CBS.com tab and 2 youtube.com table on firefox, so far NO single break at all!

Thanks very much for resolving the haunting firefox crashes!!!
