The only way out is a ctrl-alt-backspace to abort the X server.
Another (possibly related) problem is that the user switch function goes dead - A password window is present, but does nothing. Again the only way out is ctrl-alt-backspace.
I haven't seen either problem under LXDE. Still investigating...

The graphics problem sounds like it's with Mutter/Muffin. LXDE has no standard compositor, as you probably know. That's the problem/dislike I've always had with these "always on" compositors with Gnome-Shell and Unity. Though I thought they had at least introduced full screen undirecting(?) in Mutter.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)
How is it looking for cinnamon on F17, Leigh? I'd really like to try the alpha, but I refuse to go back to gnomes-hell after getting used to cinnamon.
Thanks,

You tried to install the source rpm. Go to this link, scroll down and download the file from the "cinnamon-1.3.1-5.fc16.i686.rpm" link. Then install it with "sudo yum --nogpgcheck install PathTocinnamon-1.3.1-5.fc16.i686.rpm".

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)
Noticed an interesting bug: after dragging one of the panel favorites to a different spot, the entire favorites panel jumps to the right a bit. It moves back after reloading the shell though.

Leigh I am very keen to hear your buy in on this topic if you have time to share it with us.
Would Gnome would ever accept Cinnamon as a component of Gnome Shell as opposed to a fork? This would be an ideal solution as there would not be code duplication as such and no delay in bug / security fixes between upstream and the fork.

it has nothing to do with Gnome. its Fedora's Policy on Forked stuff which IMO sucks, makes me wonder why they bothered to approve Muffin if they are not gonna approve Cinnamon
IMO or Fedora are doing is forcing people to use Fedora's Gnome and KDE and XFCE and other Fedora bits. and you wonder why Fedora are losing package Maintainers cause of there silly policies.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)
I noticed one post on the devel mailing list questioning if the cinnamon patches had ever been shown to upstream, aka the gnome devs. From what I've read on the cinnamon site, the patches were flatly rejected by upstream. So I'd say there's no chance cinnamon will get rolled into gnomes-hell. Our only hope is that Fedora has a factual debate about the merits of the fork, and realizes that the gnome devs are about as open to outside influences as Tolkien's dwarves were.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)
Looks like there is currently no issues with forks assuming they do not interfere with anything else!
https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/810
However the discussion appears to be far from over.
https://fedorahosted.org/fpc/ticket/148
Hopefully this means Cinnamon will continue to progress in Fedora.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)
If it doesn't, then I for one will fall back to F14 or switch distributions to something that works.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)
I looks like the Fedora developers either:
a. don't realize how arrogant the Gnome developers are
b. are in cahoots with the Gnome developers

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnomes-hell)
That's not entirely surprising. A great many developers indeed work on both.

Gnome aren't about to admit their product might benefit from altering in any way.
