PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

Hello,

I have bought a laptop MSI GE620DX. It has NVIDIA
GeForce GT 555M. I have installed Fedora 16 64-bit.
Then from runlevel 3, as root, I have installed the driver

NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.20.run

which I have downloaded from nvidia's home page.
Afterwards, Fedora got stuck. In the xorg.0.log file
I can see the following errors:

(EE) no devices detected

and right after that:

No screens found.

Reinstalling the driver has wiped my old xorg.conf file, which
was backed up by the first installation of the driver!! (xorg.conf.backup)

I have tried to recreate xorg.conf using the command Xorg :1 -configure.
Now I can see the background image, but Gnome doesn't load :-(
So I can't run anymore ANY graphics mode. Please help me...

Thanks a lot in advance for your quick response!

Please let me know at least which driver I could set in xorg.conf in order
to get back to ANY graphics mode from which I could try the rpmfusion
drivers:

Re: PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

I would recommend that you uninstall the 295.20 driver you got from the Nvidia site, then follow the install instructions carefully from Leigh's Nvidia Driver Guide. From that, you will get the v290.10 driver, which has a much higher probability of working on your system.

You should be able to do:
Code:
# sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.20.run uninstall
Just delete any current xorg.conf file, then the nouveau driver should be the default one.

Re: PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

Hola Pablo,

thanks for your advice. I've already come across that but I wasn't sure if there is a higher probability for it to work.
Can you pls confirm that uninstalling the nVidia driver will enable me to have any graphics mode again? Cuz otherwise I won't be able to implement Leigh's guide without an internet connection? And as I mentioned, my
original xorg.conf has been lost :-/
I'll give it a try tomorrow, as now its almost 3AM and I need to get some sleep... Thank you!

Re: PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

Hi Skullbox,

the installation offers that to be done automatically, which I have accepted.
Anyway, I'll give it a go for eventual additional options.
Anyway, the nVidia site states:

Some designs incorporating supported GPUs may not be compatible with the NVIDIA Linux driver: in particular, notebook and all-in-one desktop designs with switchable (hybrid) or Optimus graphics will not work if means to disable the integrated graphics in hardware are not available

which sucks pretty much.
I can still return this laptop, but there is almost no other, which I really like, and even if, they have similar adapters, like nVidia 540 for example and I'm almost sure that they will be affected by the same problem too...

Re: PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

Hi Skullbox,

I am planning to try that tonight. Reinstalling the nVidia driver wiped the backup version of my original xorg.conf file and now I'm unable to get to ANY graphics mode. So, I don't have internet connection in text mode and was therefore unable to try that yesterday.
Please kindly let me know if there is a quick way to recover? I will try uninstalling the nVidia driver, as advised above by Pablo. Please let me know if you have better ideas or an exact approach to get back my desktop, even with resolution, which sux. Thanks a lot !!

Hello Skullbox and thanks for being so involved in my problem.
I've come across Bumblebee yesterday night... Now I've read your here-link carefully, but I see that the links for getting Bumblebee are all dead, leading to 404 error... :-/
Could you pls post an actual download link? Thanks a lot :-)

Hello everybody

could pls somebody post here the link to Bumblebee and more important - some howto.
I found some old Bumblebee, which contains separate files for many kinds of laptops and NONE for MSI at all.
There is some Bumblebee project with some UI, but it's totally unclear whether you need to have something "under" that UI or it's all you need. Thanks!

@Pablo - Leigh's guide didn't work, unless I need to manually modify the driver used in xorg.conf. Please kindly let me know...

modprobe nvidia returns an error. What to do now ? Out of ideas...

Re: PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

Im a little confused here, does your computer have dual graphics? (intel/nvidia) If it doesnt then u dont need to use bumblebee at all. If your just trying to get the nvidia driver working, you dont need to look further than the article i linked to you. Please confirm.

Re: PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

Hello skullbox,

YES, my computer has dual graphics! Yes, intel AND nvidia :-) And yes, it seems I need Bumblebee...

The funny part is, that in Spanish, envidia means envy... And noone should envy me for this problem :-D

---------- Post added at 01:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:26 AM ----------

Benko from this forum promised to prepare an .rpm of Bumblebee for Fedora.
The original Bumblebee webpage doesn't support Fedora.
I could try installing from the source code, anyway I have been trying that in many other cases and it has always failed with usually a lot of errors :-(

OK. so no hope ?

Re: PLEASE HELP! A serious problem with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M

As this thread is not very active, I'd just like to conclude it for others, who might be suffering the same problem. Optimus is not (yet) supported in Linux. nVidia said, that their management hasn't yet decided about Linux support for Optimus. There is no way to get decent graphics. I'm stuck at 1280x800.
