upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
My machine automatically upgraded from the 3.2.3-2 (fedora core 16) kernel to the 3.2.5-3 kernel, on booting I get
loading initial ramdisk
[3.48506]kernel panic -not syncing
VFS: unable to mount root fs,
and so on.
There is no initramfs-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64.img in /boot, and the grub.cfg file in /boot/grub2 has no line containing
initrd initramfs-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64.img
in the menuentry for the 3.2.5-3 kernel.
Any ideas anyone?

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
I dont assume you can load into a fallback entry as grub.cfg is empty, right?
Have you by chance any live media lying around? (might even been a DvD or Net-install)
You can choose upgrade option to reinstall bootloader.
EDIT:
However, if you CAN boot into any fallback, you might want to run these 2 commands:
Code:
sudo plymouth-set-default-theme charge --rebuild-initrd
sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
Yea, the first line seems weird, i've just chosen that as i dont know another way to rebuild your initrd

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Assuming the 3.2.5-3 kernel actually got installed.. try, as root,
Code:
dracut /boot/initramfs-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64.img 3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64
Then try the second command posted by sea above.
Then reboot and see if the new kernel is in your grub menu.

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
I just installed Fedora a couple of days ago and after some updates got the same issue. I still have a grub menu though and booting into 3.1.0-7 works fine. This is what I got:

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
To see is yum/rpm thinks the 3.2.5-3 kernel is installed...
Code:
rpm -q kernel-3.2.5.x86_64
If it returns the kernel name-version-release-arch string, then try,
Code:
yum reinstall kernel-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64
If it says the package is not installed, then,
Code:
yum install kernel-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Sadly none of that works for me. All I can do is load in the previous kernel. The re-install gave the message of nothing to do, fedora reported that the kernel is installed, so I guess my only option is to wait for the next kernel?

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Hi Deminox, does the "nothing to do" mean you actually have the initramfs files?

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Lemme explain my setup and whats happening and what I did.
Toshiba Satellite with i7 and win7 home premium. Single hard drive. I followed the steps to multi-boot found *here* http://thpc.info/dual/win7/dualboot_...r_on_win7.html
First boot worked fine, so did several others. UNTIL I got the update to kernel 3.2.5-3.
when Grub loads, I have kernel 3.2.5-3 as the first option. If I load it gives a "wall of fail" of error codes. The first time it didnt boot, i read something about partition location 0-0, but I didnt write it down figuring i would see it again. Never saw that specifc message again, now its a wall-of-fail much like what was posted by Mfoe, but not those exact errors, i dont think. Its hard to tell because its before an OS loads so i cant exactly screencap it.
So, I boot in the previous kernel, and THAT works fine. so, while still in the previous kernel I do the steps suggested by PabloTwo. It shows that 3.2.5-3 IS intsalled, so I do the reinstall step. It does that thing where it checks for package info, tells you how many bytes it is, and so on, but then says "Nothing to do" and ends.
Annnnd thats where I am. So I just keep booting in the previous kernel.

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Hi Deminox,
I was hoping that you might have the files initramfs-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64.img in /boot, and the same for the System.map
and config files. In that case it's just a matter of editing /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.
Anyone else reading this, would it be crazy to try yum erase and then try again? And: is it worth bothering?

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Here's what I have, screencapped from the previous kernel (aka the only one that runs)

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Hi. initramfs-3.2.5-3.fc16.x86_64.img is clearly absent, and should have been put there by yum reinstall. It might be reckless doing yum remove or yum erase, so I would wait for advice from someone who knows more than I do.

Re: upgrade to 3.2.5-3 kernel panic
Why monkey around with the 3.2.5-3 kernel now when it's not even the current latest kernel?
Code:
BASH:~/-> uname -r
3.2.6-3.fc16.x86_64
You should be doing,
Hopefully this time around the 3.2.6-3 kernel will install correctly.

Thank you PabloTwo. That worked for me too.
You have saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks again.
