installing f16, filesystem errors

hello,

Im trying to install F16 on my laptop, so i boot in through the live cd. I click the install to hard drive option and let it do its thing, however it always gets stuck while copying live image from cd and throws this error:

"ext4 filesystem check failure on /dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root:

File system errors left uncorrected"

After a bit of googling i opened up the terminal, entered "su -" to get superuser access and then "fsck -y /dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root"

after it was done it said the filesystem had errors and was modified now, i assume that means it fixed errors that were found. i ran it again to be safe and it gave me:

"_Fedora-16-x86_6: clean, 68828/155648 files, 406213/608029 blocks"

few things:
-im on a 64 bit system and downloaded the x64 iso so im not sure why it says x86
-it doesnt look like it checked all the files and blocks

i tried installing to hard drive again and it failed with the same error.

any ideas?

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

Hi all

Looks like you are getting to the "type of installation" page e.g. Use All Space, Replace Existing Linux etc
and not seeing that down the bottom left, Use LVM is ticked. If you don't know what this is you don't want it -
Turn this off.

Do a Custom Layout.
You will need at least 2 partitions, one for swap (2Gb), the other for /

Note that 64 bit is written x86_64

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

well, I started the install, used custom partition and after the partitions are formated I run "fsck" in the disk I what to use and it's all ok. So I continue to the next menu in the instalation process were he starts copiyng files to the disk and when it reach about alf the bar he do a filesystem check and "PUM!" I got that error message.
I re-run "fsck" and now the disc is full of errors! :s

p.s.: when I say disk I mean partition, I'm not using the entire disc to install Fedora.

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

The same issue. Some manuals over the internet suggest to use separate ext3 partition for /boot but it didn't help me. I will try to install f15 and then upgrade

I have tried that too, ext3 and ext4 /boot partition. (Not in RAID or LVM). Some where I read that the /boot partition is getting written to GPT partition.

After anaconda displays error I run fdisk -l on hard drive. The only partition is the GPT partition. What happened to my boot partition??? Also for a quick test I restarted anaconda and did "Use all space" and had LVM checked. Same issue too so to me it looks like a LVM issue rather than soft RAID issue.

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

Hi all,

I was having this trouble (filesystem corruption detected during post-install configuration via anaconda) with my new Lenovo Thinkpad E520 installing Fedora 16 i686 from a live boot off a flash drive. I had originally downloaded the image with a torrent and the installation failed every time -- LVM or not, /boot as ext3 or ext4, etc. I did see a lot of SQUASHFS errors in the /var/log/messages and when I tried to install in text-only mode (anaconda -T) it threw an error about /dev/sr0 not being present. Oddly the original image checked out okay via `sha256sum -c`, but these errors both hinted at a corrupt/incomplete live image.

Anyhoo I downloaded a new copy of the image from the fedora website, remade the live boot flash drive, and the install worked perfectly. I -did- use ext3 as my boot partition fs for EFI reasons but this is probably unrelated.

Not sure if this will help out (or why it worked, for that matter) but it may save someone a headache.

Regards,

Mario

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

I'd suggest to try 2 diffrent setups, both to be done as CUSTOM.

GPT
  1. BIOS_BOOT, 1 mb
  2. /boot, 512 mb, vfat, ext4
  3. /, 16 to 32 GB, ext4 or btrfs
  4. SWAP, 2-4 GB
  5. /home, (fill up to max available space), ext4 or btrfs

MBR
  1. /boot, 512 mb
  2. /, 16-32 GB
  3. swap, 2-4 GB
  4. extended / logical (4 kb, automticly)
  5. /home, (fill up to max available space), ext4 or btrfs

I really suggest to make a seperate /home partition, as it helps for upgrades, as you can do a fresh install and keep MOST settings.

Hope this helps.

EDIT:
If you have bandwith available, i'd suggest to redownload the spin of your choice.
Further, if you have an USB-stick its WAY faster than CD/DvD.
To use an USB-pendrive, simply modify the following syntax:
Code:
cd ~/Downloads
lsblk
dd if=FILENAME.iso of=/dev/sd?

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

Hi Guys/Girls

I got the same issue anaconda screwing up file copy, however I created a post in December already.
So for completness I want to add the link to yours

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=274315

In brief, my issue and solution:
- anaconda fails to copy part of the files. leaving the root filesystem corrupted beyond reasonable repair.
- installed Fedora 15 instead and did the yum upgrade (procedure in the manual of fedora, don't have the link at hand.)

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

Same problem here:

Fedora 16 x64 KDE spin live CD iso
Unetbootin
usb install
Dell Optiplex 755
gets to end of copying files to hard drive

fails with "Unrecoverable error: "ext4 filesystem check failure on /dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root:

File system errors left uncorrected"

I have tried several disk layouts at they all fail, tried two separate SATA hard drives, triedredownloading the iso and checking the SHA sum, still get same error.

Has anyone fixed this yet?

Re: installing f16, filesystem errors

Hi folks

Had the same issue when I tried to install Fedora 16 onto my new SAMSUNG 830 SSD (128GB). The ISO files always were correct (SHA256 Checksums). Even tried different DVD-ROM drives. Once the error was at around 50% the next time it was at around 75%.
I always use LVM setup mode.

I finally solved the problem as follows:

- Downloaded Fedora-16-i386-netinst.iso
- Booted from this and installed directly from Internet.

This took around 1h15m (around 30 minutes more as from local DVD) but had the advantage that I already had the newest files and kernel installed. So no "yum update" after installation and installing 1GB of updates.

Hope this helps
Regards,
Oliver
