Fedora16 kernel 3.2.1 panic on ATOM netbook

Hi, gurus.

I have an old MSI WIND netbook w/ ATOM 270 cpu.
When today I did "software update" I got a kernel panic. I switched to previous version of kernel and everything went OK now.
In grub menu I have the following items:
1. Fedora (3.2.1-3.fc16.i686)
2. Fedora (3.1.9-1.fc16.i686)

Point 1 produces the kernel panic before I can login into the system
Point 2 works OK.

Should I collect data and how can I do that?

Thanks.
Alexei.

I have the same machine and I have the same problem too. I don't get the panic and hang until just after I login. Staying with 3.1.9-1.fc16.i686 kernel for now.

Re: Fedora16 kernel 3.2.1 panic on ATOM netbook

I have the same problem on my Eee Box B202, except that it is compounded by a failed preupgrade that didn't get grub2 properly installed. I've now got a broken grub install and a kernel that, when I do manage to get it booted, crashes within about 30 seconds.

I am building a USB rescue disk from Fedora Live now.

Thanks for posting about your issue. When I looked yesterday I did not see any problem reports for this kernel. I had no idea what was going on. At least I now know what I need to do to fix this problem.

Updated to kernel 3.2.2-1 and all seems to be well now.

That version breaks my wireless LAN adapter: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=772772

I have RTL8187SE wifi. To use it I use kmod-staging support from RPM Fusion.
My wifi works OK now. But sometimes staging support two to three days behind a new kernel.

Re: Fedora16 kernel 3.2.1 panic on ATOM netbook

I can't help thinking there is an underlying problem in the kernel network stack on this new architecture.

I am using 3.1.5-1.fc16.x86_64 now, and the Acer is my 3rd. Until recently I had few problems.

I build machines off the Acer, using both kickstart for fedora machines and jumpstart for Solaris machines. These builds involve a large amount of network traffic via either http or nfs.

With Fedora 13, and I don't remember the kernel version everything worked fine. I recently replaced the old machine and used Fedora 16.

The problem I get is simple, the machine just stops, no panic, nothing; just suddenly no network and no mouse or keyboard action. The only resolution is to power cycle the thing, and then it may be ok for a few hours, or not.

The WLAN access I do not use, only if I am browsing or grabbing email on the train, and this works fine.

Any advice would be welcome :-)

Many thanks

John
