Kindly suggest a good intermediate level book for Linux.

Hi,

I have already checked some threads related to this in the forum, but most of them are in year 2005 or 2007 or so.

Can anyone suggest a good book at intermediate level for Linux?

Would it be ok to use Fedora as a base system to learn RH Linux or should I get CentOS/SL ?

Would things like systemd be ported to Redhat later?

Kindly let me know.

Hmm, start by reading the Fedora release notes and googling for the things you don't understand.

If you are looking at learning Red Hat, goto their docs page:
docs.redhat.com

And read up. This will get you into the server side of things. For the desktop, use and ask questions about what is confusing you. For the most part, these days Fedora, SuSE, and Ubuntu are pretty damn simple to get up and running with. Rare exceptions, and usually due to flaky/wonky hardware, or very odd and very Win32 specific applications.

The Rute book is good. Oddly enough, the old Linux system administrator book on the The Linux Documentation project's site isn't bad, either.

Some of the Negus books are good--usually, you can get one for a slightly older version, say, Fedora 12 or so, very cheaply on Amazon, e.g., $1.00 plus $4.00 shipping.

The trouble is, that there's so much to know about so many things that it can be difficult to figure out what you are actually trying to learn. There is basic system administration, there is programming, networking, and so on.

It's interesting. For me, I thought the Dummies book wasn't too helpful. James, was it really your first book--that is, before you had any experience? The reason I ask that is because I've found, when someone says, This was a great book/tutorial, and I've found it unhelpful, it often means the person suggesting it already had a strong background--for example, every person that I've know to recommend the LDP's bash advanced scripting tutorial was already a programmer of some language.

EDIT: On the other hand, I read it probably close to 10 years ago, and it's quite possible that some of the things that I found problematic have been fixed in later editions.

Yep, the very first At the time the only way I could get linux was to borrow a book from the library and install it from the cd since I couldn't download the iso's (dialup was too slow). The book covered Ubuntu and fedora so I tried fedora first, liked it, and stuck with it

The book really is only for an absolute beginner, just what I needed

Could be, I think it depends on what you want to do with Red Hat Linux.

* What are your Red Hat Linux goals?

Not sure, off hand, I sort of "hope not."

Hope this helps.

Re: Kindly suggest a good intermediate level book for Linux.

At this point in time, especially if you're planning to go for one of the RH cert exams, I'd say use either CentOS or Scientific Linux--they'll have certain limitations (e.g., hardware support) as well as certain advantages (no systemd, which at least at this point in time is an advantage to system administrators--my HIGHLY subjective impression is that whether systemd is good or bad, it wasn't created by someone with a lot of sysadmin experience).

They'd be close enough so that if you master one, you can master the other, but a lot depends upon your purpose. If it's to go for the RH exams, then the Michael Jang books are generally considered very good for that.
