Updating a live install???

I am installing a live version of Fedora 15 onto a 80GB external usb drive for use in a college IT class.

Now I have tried this before but my problem is trying to run Software Update. When I use the graphical version it nver seems to finish as I let my attempt on Monday run for 24hours before I interrupted it. When I try to update thru YUM it get about half way thru installing the updates when the screen goes black, and the computer is non-functional until I restart it.

I have had this same updating problem using a 16GB thumb drive as well.

Is there something I am missing???

Thanks for any help you can give...

Re: Updating a live install???

There isn't much room on the filesystem of a "live install" for a massive update. The size is limited because the live image is squashfs and has to fit on a cdrom. It starts out about 3 or 3.5 GB with less than 1GB free space. If you want to fully update your system you are better off just doing a regular install to your usb drive.

Re: Updating a live install???

He's talking about a 80 GB.
Sorry, but on my 8 gb stick, yum has no problems to update.

Dont know if the filesystem structure does matter, so just in case:
Code:
sdb 8:16 1 7.2G 0 disk
|-sdb1 8:17 1 256M 0 part # /boot
|-sdb2 8:18 1 1G 0 part # SWAP
`-sdb3 8:19 1 6G 0 part # /

Re: Updating a live install???

To do the install of the live system onto the 80gb drive I am using the fedora produced USB creator.

Never thought to look to see what kind of partitioning structure it is creating.

Could this be part of my problem?

Even with the 80gb drive, should I use some persistant space?

Any ideas???

Re: Updating a live install???

Sea: Your root volume is 6GB so it does not look like you used live usb creator or livecd-iso-to-disk to create it. It does not matter how big the drive is a live install is limited in size like I said. On his 80GB drive he should do a normal install "install to hard disk" using anaconda.

The persistent overlay file will not increase the root filesystem space beyond what I stated. It is just a table of changes to the original filesystem.

Re: Updating a live install???

Thats true Joe, i've used the live media (therefore Anaconde) to install to usb-key.
All i had to do was to plug in the usb-key with the iso into the usb-slot which will be checked on boot and the target usb just into any other slot.
And had to write the MBR/GPT to /dev/sdb1

Maybe the error is caused by the livecd-tools, as they either expect the media to be RO or havijng a max size if ~4 gb.

IMHO way less hazzle with Anaconda rather than with live-cd/usb-tools.

Re: Updating a live install???

Was doing some reading this morning and a live-usb install can not do a normal upgrade as it can not upgrade the kernel beyond what is installed originally.

This might be why my upgrade attempts thru YUM has always failed?
