I have tired to launch nautilus as root. if failed with following message.(system is Fedora16, 64 bit, fresh install, not updated)

PHP Code:
[root@kksheth ~]# nautilus

(nautilus:1998): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set_dataassertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(nautilus:1998): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_file_has_prefix: assertion
`G_IS_FILE (file)' failed

(nautilus:1998): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_file_has_prefix: assertion `G_IS_FILE (file)'
failed
Initializing nautilus
-gdu extension

(nautilus:1998): libnotify-WARNING **: Failed to connect to proxy

[
root@kksheth ~]# exit
Is this a bug, is it reported?

Re: failure root login in nautilus fedora16

you need to use su - instead of su to sign in as root to run nautilus (or just about any graphical programs) since su - gives you the full root login shell and changes the environment to the root users environment.

And no, it's not a bug.. And yes it has been reported numerous times

Re: failure root login in nautilus fedora16

[kksheth@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# nautilus
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension

(nautilus:12512): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set_data: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(nautilus:12512): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_file_has_prefix: assertion `G_IS_FILE (file)' failed

(nautilus:12512): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_file_has_prefix: assertion `G_IS_FILE (file)' failed

(nautilus:12512): libnotify-WARNING **: Failed to connect to proxy
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[root@localhost ~]#

I have used su - and not su as you said. error is there.

So i am not able to open nautilus as root. this is surely a bug then. Things which are working earlier and now not certainly means bug.

However, i noted that when i opened a file with gedit as root from the terminal, it opens file in a root nautilus where from file menu, i can open a new file with root privileges.

Re: failure root login in nautilus fedora16

From my notes from November 11th:

Quote:
Couldn't get Nautilus to open as root, either with su or su -. Here's what happened:

$ su -
Password:
[root@steve ~]# nautilus
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension

(nautilus:1948): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set_data: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(nautilus:1948): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_file_has_prefix: assertion `G_IS_FILE (file)' failed

(nautilus:1948): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_file_has_prefix: assertion `G_IS_FILE (file)' failed

(nautilus:1948): libnotify-WARNING **: Failed to connect to proxy
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
However, I tried it again a couple of times just now, using su -, and it worked fine.

Re: failure root login in nautilus fedora16

Did you try
Code:
su
dbus-launch nautilus
Or is this also giving you errors, and finally fails?

Re: failure root login in nautilus fedora16

I noticed that running the F16 live usb nautilus fails to run as root as per post #1. Updating deja-dup package from version -19 to -20 fixes the problem. I believe it's a nautilus extension problem.

Ah. Since I noticed the problem, I see an update for deja-dup from 19.4.1.fc16 to 20.1.1.fc16, so that must be why I haven't been having a problem opening Nautilus as root after that.
