How to get a gamepad working ?

Hi, running Fedora 16 x64 and I have a xbox 360 wireless controller.
I have read everything possible and downloaded every program from the repo's that even mentioned gamepad or joystick. I don't see anything listed in the programs once they are installed and I don't know how to even see if Fedora knows it's connected.
There doesn't seem to be much info on this subject at all, I could really use some help getting pointed in the right direction.
Thanks
