    Ariel:
    looks like this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=755154
either now in updates-testing or soon in updates

For my lockups, I have absolutely nothing in the way of log messages
Samsung netbook, intel atom, with integrated intel graphics, r8192e_pci wireless driver from kernel-staging from rpmfusion. I think this could be the issue, but no idea really.

Installing updates now. Thanks! Will report back on whether the crashes recur after the update. (Hopefully that patch is in this update I am downloading).

Re: Fedora 16: freezes every day!

I've been running my laptop on a wired connection all day without crashes, then went onto wifi briefly and it froze, so I'm pretty convinced that my issue is the r8192e_pci wireless driver from rpmfusion kmod-staging. I know it's a staging driver so not expected to be 100% stable, so going to report it as a bug.

ariel - you shoudl start your own thread - not piggyback in another.

You seem to have rtl driver errors and also some apic timer problems.
Try adding "noapic" option to the kernel command line
(edit /boot/grub2/grub.cfg and put "noapic" you'll see some lines like ...
linux /boot/vmlinuz-3..... buncha options LAN=en_US-UTF-8 noapic

Then reboot the kernel you selected.
That *MAY* fix the problem, but I'd wager realtek driver is the problem.

---------- Post added at 05:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:42 PM ----------

It looks more like this bug (the the 'ce driver rather than the 'se driver.

They suggest you need a 3.2-rc5 kernel

Sorry, this seemed like a good place to post since everyone else in this thread has had similar problems with freezing. Starting a new thread seemed like fragmenting a common problem. Besides, other people in the thread could benefit from your suggestions now. Maybe they have similar problems with the "apic timer" but haven't noticed it yet?

Thanks very much for looking at my log files. I have added the apic word to the kernel lines.
Any ideas why my laptop has these apic errors and not others? What could have caused it?

Hmmm.. that is annoying. Do you think uninstalling the kernel module and reinstalling the driver from realtek's driver page might address this issue?

I updated and I still have the same kernel. So the updates that they are talking about haven't made it out yet. How would I install this kernel you mention?

Re: Fedora 16: freezes every day!

I have the same problems, Fedora is sporadically freezing. When it happens, there is no mouse movement possible, no possibility to change to another terminal via Alt+Function keys, etc. It is pretty frustrating.

Today I let my machine (Thinkpad T410, latest kernel, nvidia driver from rpmfusion) run and left my room for a while. It froze at 21:24. After rebooting, /var/log/messages showed the last entry prior to the reboot at 21:05.

Can someone open a bugreport in the bugzilla for this? I am not really sure what logs to append and how to proceed.

I have seen that too. In addition, even the Alt+SysRq+REISUB combination does not work. I also tried SSHing through a remote machine and that doesn't work either. There is no other option but to do a cold boot with the power button. I wanted to file a bug report. But I am not sure I know how to replicate it. It occurs very randomly. I switched from Chrome to Firefox to see if it would improve things any, but it freezes in firefox as well. Furthermore, Gnome shell randomly crashes and drops me into the screen that shows the startup messages (and errors) and then restarts again. Many times there are no signs in the log. Sometimes there are some messages, like the ones I posted.Fedora 16 has been an absolute nightmare. :/

What is your wireless card? Can you do an lspci | grep wifi ?

There is now a bug report about the random freezes. It has been assigned to someone called Owen Taylor.

I hope you mean "noapic" with a NO but no quotes.
The BIOS/APIC code is buggy on most laptops//portables. It's common. Lenovo seems better than average, Dell worse than average IMO,. You used to be able to download APIC tests cd from Intel. This *sounds* like an APIC mis-advertizing timer features.

Hmmm.. that is annoying. Do you think uninstalling the kernel module and reinstalling the driver from realtek's driver page might address this issue?
There is a reasonable chance, but go ahead and see if it compiles w/ the current kernel before removing the kernel/repo one.

You should be able to get a 3.2.x kernel from the koji repo.
    http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Using_...i_build_system

Here is one (among hundreds) of future kernel candidates you can download from the koji repo.
    http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/b...buildID=278246

    See here
    http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/p...fo?packageID=8
    http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/search
as a starting point for a search.

It won't hurt to install the newer kernel and TRY it to see if it solves the problem. You can always boot the older kernel.

I've been having the same problems. It seems to me that we all have ATi cards, could the drivers be causing it?

For me it's the Realtek wireless card; doesn't freeze if I turn it off.

Re: Fedora 16: freezes every day!

I have an nVidia Optimus GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3] (rev a1) graphic card and the realtek RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01), so it's perhaps not an ATI-specific issue.

I have now gone through two kernel updates since I installed from the official livecd. The latest kernel update was yesterday. Though the freezes have not gone away entirely, they have reduced in frequency. Now, if the system freezes and I go away to get a cup of tea, when I get back it usually is limping back out of the freeze.

I am always on wireless. I also have a sandy-bridge processor and a GPU with optimus switching technology (toshiba P750). I am not sure which or how many of these components lie behind these freeze issues. If everyone could maybe post the results of

    lspci | grep -i wifi
    and
    lspci | grep -i vga
    and
    lspci | grep -i processor

here, it could be very handy in identifying common elements behind everyone's freezes/crashes on F16.

Re: Fedora 16: freezes every day!

I use fedora on my asus g73 (intel i7-720QM, 8gb ram, ati radeon hd 5870 mobility, atheros AR9285) and i've experienced freezes as well.

I've had it happen in other occasions (on just alt tabbing), but it would frequently happen if, some time after login, i tried to go to the Activities Overview.
If i am logged in for a while i know that going to the overview will likely freeze the laptop.

It is a "deep" freeze of the whole system, nothing works, no ctrl+alt+F# or ctrl+alt+bckspc not event the keys for toggling keyboard lights or turning off the screen work, i have to press the power button for 3secs to turn off the pc.

I am running vanilla fedora 16 with the drivers that come with it.

I'll check out the logs with more attention, but i didn't see anything significant there.

Re: Fedora 16: freezes every day!

Mine hasn't frozen up since setting the graphics to Forced Fallback Mode. I miss out on some of the Gnome 3 shell stuff, but at least it isn't locking up several times a day.
