MInecraft Beta 1.9 rel.4

So, this is a fun game and works well on Linux and just about everything else. It is built on Java. You can set up your own server and have fun. So, basically, you spawn into a world where you have to survive. You make crude tools, chop trees, dig, mine, kill animals and monsters, and craft all the stuff you find into useful things.

It's fun. It does cost about $30.00 but then you get not stop. Oh, you down load the stable version and then look for the beta if you want to live on the wild side. There is an official Minecraft Wiki. Anyways, have fun with that.

Re: MInecraft Beta 1.9 rel.4

I set up a server and now am interested in how to add a map. Can you give me a step by step on that? I'm a long time linux newbie.

Also, does anybody know if I can use the GPLed openJDK instead of Sun/Oracle Java?

You could give OpenJdk a try. It just might work. And as far as a map. I'm pretty sure you have to make one within the game out of material you mine and harvest. Check the wiki at http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki
The wiki has all the ingredients for your stuff. You can also make a compass which is very helpful.

Yeah that wiki is useful. I used it to install the server. My daughter downloaded a preconfigured map she wants to use. I find useful basic instructions for doing this stuff on windows all over but linux is a different story. I was pleased to see this thread started.

Pretty much, the maps are cross platform. You just have to indicate it in your server properties file and then you can change worlds. This is pretty Linux friendly. Windows uses .exe files. We stick to the .jar files and it works great.
