Does the Application menu actually do anything?

All I ever see when I click on the Application menu in Gnome 3 is "Quit [Program]." Does it ever do anything other than allowing you to quit a program?

Not currently. There are plans for programs to add menu items to it in future versions (starting with GNOME 3.4 I think), but programs have to be programmed to do so. For simple programs they seem to be planning to use it to replace the menu bar, but how that'll work if you're not using gnome-shell I don't know.

Aha, I see. But I really enjoy the current layout with the time in the middle. This will be interesting for sure.
