Question Picking a Linux gaming pad correctly

As it turns out a controller I had to play on pc (MS Xbox360 wireless for PC) just suicided himself.

Since I'm mostly surfing on linux these days (haven't booted into windows since easter) I would like to buy a controller that won't bring me migraines untill I set it up on linux.

Does the community have any guidelines or tips as to what controller to choose?
I have the alternative of buying a bluetooth adapter and pairing my PS3 controllers but I have heard that this is somewhat of a hassle so I would like to avoid it.

If you have any oppinions leave your comments below,
cheers
