Gnome 3 quit working on update of Fedora 15

Hi,

About a month ago I installed Fedora 15 to a Dell Inspiron. All worked well. Last week I did a standard update of the software and Gnome 3 quit working. I can log in. Sometimes it displays the menu bar along the top, but nothing else works. Other times it only displays the background. When the menu bar at the top does show up, the icons are there as usual, but none do anything. Touching the top left corner now does nothing.

I have renamed the . config files in my account so that new ones would be generated. I have added a new account (I still have the old ones). I have removed and reinstalled Gnome using Yum in KDE. (Did a groupremove then reinstalled everything using the yum log.) Still all the same.

The install disk is in the drive. Finger hovering over the power button. But I'd really rather fix it than go all barbarian and reinstall. Save a couple of days of setup and all that. So, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Do you have some gnome-shell extensions installed?

This was all done via a "yum update" command.

I'm not aware of installing any gnome-shell extensions. I did a full install of Fedora 15 64 to a new laptop with a replacement hard drive (original in a box on the shelf). I then did the usual Personal Install stuff to add the Flash plugin and fonts, etc. I also added a bunch of the games from the repositories.

All worked well until I got home from vacation and did the update.

Question Re: Gnome 3 quit working on update of Fedora 15

Have you tried to boot the previous kernel yet? (2.6.40 is a 3.0.0 Linux kernel in disguise)

Re: Gnome 3 quit working on update of Fedora 15

My face is red. Eleven years with Linux. I've done exactly that before for similar reasons, and it didn't even pass through my mind. Old Timers must have kicked in.

Yes. That did it. Thanks for the gentle smack up side the head. Clearly I needed it.

The question that pops up now is: Since this happened as a result of a basic yum update, and since it is clearly kernel/gnome interaction related, and since 2.6.3x to 3.0.0 (by any name) is more than a simple incremental jump, why am I the only one wondering WTFH? (Rhetorical question, of course.)

Again, thanks for the help!

Re: Gnome 3 quit working on update of Fedora 15

Fedora's 2.6.40 kernel has broken lots of things for lots of people. I'm not in the position to tell which issues are known or will be fixed. The very latest one is this: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/upda....6.40.3-0.fc15

Re: Gnome 3 quit working on update of Fedora 15

One of the first failures some users have run into are with ALSA and PulseAudio getting silent because of that.

This thread gives some rationales on why 2.6.40.

Your updates are a bit weird. I have too an F15 x86 updated system and by now 28.08.11 my system has the 2.6.40.3-0.fc15.x86_64 kernel and you updated to 2.6.40.4-0.fc15.x86_64. What repos do you have? Maybe you left enabled rawhide.

?? Well, the latest kernel in the F15 repo is 2.6.40.3-0, and no it's not in the rawhide repo.(Rawhide contains fc17 packages now) Mine updated to the 2.6.40-4 kernel on July 31. (Note 2.6.40.3-0 is a later kernel than 2.6.40-4. I got the 2.6.40.3-0 kernel on August 17)

(clip from my yum.log)

This was a new installation to a newly purchased laptop. During my post-install configuration I added rpmfusion - both free and nonfree, adobe, atrpms (normally disabled - included solely for libdvdcss), and google-chrome. I added no other repos, though rawhide is included on the list (not enabled), as is testing (not enabled).

Ultimately this is a pretty vanilla installation. That's why I was surprised that Gnome died. I don't think (though of course I could be wrong) that I added anything that would alter things far beyond Fedora's normal updates. Certainly I've added software, but the only thing that did not come from one of the enabled repos is the Worker file manager, which I compiled myself.

Reverting to the earlier version of the kernel fixed the problem, so I've excluded the kernel from updates for the time being. I'll try it again after a few kernel updates.
