Speakers not muting when headphones are plugged in

Hello. I am running Fedora 15 on an Asus laptop. I have noticed that when I plug in my headphones, the main laptop speakers do not mute. I tried searching for this problem, but since I am new to linux, I could not understand any of the answers. Could someone please help me with this problem?

The speakers should mute when you plug in your headphones (assuming they are not USB headphones).

My experience is that when this failure to automute happens, it is often due to the automatic alsa sound driver configuration upon boot not accurately configuring one's audio configuration.

There is a way to force one's audio configuration upon boot, but to know what setting to apply one needs to know more detail on the hardware/software setup.

With your laptop connected to the Internet, can you please send the following command as a regular user in a terminal:
Code:
/usr/bin/alsa-info.sh
and select the SHARE/UPLOAD option, and then when the diagnostic script is completely finished read the terminal message at the end and it will tell you of a WEB SITE/ URL address that you need to pass to those providing you support. Please post here that WEB SITE/ URL address .

I note VIA ID 8446 for the hardware audio codec. I've never encountered that before.

I believe you are in bug reporting territory here, and need to raise a bug report.

In the meantime, how would I go about muting the speakers? Also, what should I put in the bug report?

I don't really know. Your mixer options are limited. I note:

Code:
!!Amixer output
!!-------------

!!-------Mixer controls for card 0 [PCH]

Card hw:0 'PCH'/'HDA Intel PCH at 0xdf600000 irq 43'
Mixer name	: 'Intel CougarPoint HDMI'
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Front Left: Playback 29 [69%] [-19.50dB]
  Front Right: Playback 29 [69%] [-19.50dB]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Front Left: Playback 249 [98%] [-1.20dB]
  Front Right: Playback 249 [98%] [-1.20dB]
You could try , with headphones plugged in, lower the level of the Master mixer volume control and see if that affects both headphones and speakers. And do the same for the headphones. Other than that, IMHO you need to get this fixed by an alsa developer.

In the bug report describe your problem symptoms, and attach to the bug report the /tmp/alsa-info.txt file you get by running
Code:
/usr/bin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload
and then keep an eye on the bug report.
