CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
A few days ago I tried mounting a new CD, but nothing happened. I tried again, with a CD I'd used before with the same results. I tried a DVD in the same drive and it mounted OK, so it's not hardware. (I haven't had time until now to report this.) The box is running F 14 and is fully updated. Below is the results from /var/log/messages saved from June 28:

Jul 28 15:11:58 khorlia hald: unmounted /dev/sr0 from '/media/DVD' on behalf of uid 500
I tried again today before posting this, but nothing shows up in the log. In fact, the messages above were still at the end of the log! I don't know what that means, but I'm reporting it because it may be significant. BTW, this box runs 24/7 and only reboots for a kernel update.

Re: CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
It may still be a hardware issue. About a year ago I was at a Linux Clinic where we help people having problems with Linux. One fellow had exactly the same problem. Another one of the helpers (who knew more about optical drives than I do) pointed out that modern DVD drives use two read heads, one for CDs and the other for DVDs. It is not uncommon for one to fail while the other continues to work.
If you can do so, buy, beg, borrow or steal a different DVD drive and plug it into the computer. That's the only way to be certain it is or is not hardware related.

Re: CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
But...but...but...that would mean shutting my computer down! I hate doing that unless I have to!
[joe@khorlia Desktop]$ uptime
19:15:15 up 46 days, 2:35, 2 users, load average: 1.09, 0.89, 0.89
Any other suggestions? *Whimper!*

Have you considered external?
And I agree that it still sounds like HW, for the exact reason stated.

Re: CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
hmmm.. Those messages look familiar.
I had issues with Fedora and AUDIO cd's where it could not mount an audio cd. I got those same errors. (had no problems if it was a data cd.)
It was a bug in some package, but I can't remember which one it was now since it happened a couple of months ago.

There ya go, Sidebrnz. Try different kinds of CDs. Try burning a CD. If none of them will mount, then it is almost certainly hardware.
And I feel you pain about rebooting.

Yep. try different types of cd's.
I wasn't trying to imply that your problem isn't a hardware problem, but that it possibly could still be something else instead, and that there was an issue not too long ago that did cause problems with audio cd's.
(I am thinking that the problem was in the udisks package, but still not certain about it)

Re: CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
OK, I just tried a data CD. It mounted just fine and I was able to read a text file on it. It's not, repeat not hardware.

YEP, that proves it! (or one would think) - sounded like HW until THIS came along...
But wait, is this one that you burned yourself & the OTHER CD's came from another source, such as commercial?
In that case it COULD be head alignment. (especially if just recently burned)
I'll admit, I'm not sure if this applies to the latest combos drives or not.
If you DID burn that data CD recently, try if in another machine / drive - if it WON'T read, that is most likely the issue.
But yeah, given what you just stated, it's more likely SW...

Re: CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
Yes, it's one I burned but not recently. I just tried a commercial data CD and it worked fine. Not hardware.

OK - now I'd DEFINITELY agree...
Did you rule out bad CD's yet? How do the one's that WON'T mount work in another machine / drive?
I've had a silly thing as a fingerprint on them, keeping them from working. (some of the packaging I've ran into "forces" me to grab the disc.)

Re: CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
The audio CD that I use for testing is one that I've mounted, listened to and ripped in the past. The others I've tried are brand-new commercial CDs. A fingerprint on one, possibly; on two, fresh from the store? I think not.

I think I was adding this (editing my post) after your post... it clarifies what I was getting at.
Well, I hope you can find the TRUE cause, sounds like you are about there.

Re: CDs no longer mounting, but DVDs OK.
Is this the bug you were thinking of: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=533643 because if so, it's been open since November 2009.
