Fedora 15 wireless internet not working (firmware not found etc)
Hi all;
I just upgraded from Fedora 14 to 15 and am having problems getting my wireless internet to work.
I never had it working in Fedora 14 as it told me "firmware was missing."
I have tried many different approaches described online and non have seemed to help me.
I have an HP dv6700 laptop with a Broadcom "Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)" chipset.
I have installed the Broadcom-wl set from yum as well.
What am I doing wrong? Why can't I get it to work?
Thank you!
Josh

The message about missing firmware probably was referring to firmware for the b43 driver that comes with Fedora kernels. Many BCM4312 cards work with b43, and the kernel will detect them and load the b43 module. But you have to install the firmware, and you apparently never did that. Anyway, the BCM4312 chipset also works well with broadcom-wl which you specifically mentioned. In fact, I don't recall an example of one not being able to work with it.

Sometimes, trying a bunch of things without undoing or removing things that didn't work can lead to issues with subsequently tried methods.

I don't know. But you should take a moment to review (and post) the relevant installed packages, the running kernel, the installed kernel modules, etc. Often, the answers to your questions above will be found amongst that information.
Code:
rpm -qa | grep -e kernel -e kmod-wl -e broadcom-wl | sort
uname -r
lsmod | sort
iwconfig
iwlist
The installed package versions should make sense vis-a-vis each other and the running kernel. The wl module should be loaded. An IP address should have been acquired. Networks should be available. Etc, etc. IMO, nothing more can be said until that kind of stuff is published.
If that stuff is turns out to be perfectly appropriate and correct, then some other common things to consider are an on/off switch (it happens all the time) and rfkill.

Re: Fedora 15 wireless internet not working (firmware not found etc)
Hey Mr. Stout.
I did as you asked and entered those commands in. Keep in mind I am a Fedora n00b (i was asked to install it for myself for Math research purposes) also that I am on my windows pc right now ergo why the message on the wired and wireless both have no connections.

Re: Fedora 15 wireless internet not working (firmware not found etc)
Reboot and choose kernel-2.6.38.8-32.fc15.i686 in the GRUB menu. Check NetworkManager again for networks.

Re: Fedora 15 wireless internet not working (firmware not found etc)
Hey;
If NetworkManager is the upper right corner drop down menu, then I still am not picking anything up. Also the light on my wireless switch is orange, and is normally blue when it is on on my windows side

Re: Fedora 15 wireless internet not working (firmware not found etc)
The NetworkManager panel icon looks like two monitors with a red X when wireless is enabled but not connected. It changes to signal strength bars with a wireless connection established. Anyway, left-click that icon and look for available networks. If none are there when some are known to be in range, then I think I'm out of ideas for the moment. After a Fedora version upgrade, I guess it could be anything. Always check lsmod for wl when you try something. If wl is not loaded, then none of the other variables matter. If wl is loaded, then try the rfkill idea mentioned already. Try connecting by wired NIC and update the whole system. Check /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state for something to enable. Try blacklisting the ssb module if it is listed in lsmod with wl.

Re: Fedora 15 wireless internet not working (firmware not found etc)
The last information that you posted nine days ago showed that the wl module is not loaded. There is no use looking at anything else until the driver module is loaded. That akmod-wl package will create the kmod whenever you boot into a kernel that does not already have one. So if you have the driver packages installed, then perhaps something is disabling the device (as already mentioned) such as a simple switch, a BIOS setting, rfkill.
You could study the current results of these again...
Code:
rpm -qa | grep -e kernel -e kmod-wl -e broadcom-wl | sort
uname -r
lsmod | sort
iwconfig
There should be a kmod-wl package corresponding to the currently running kernel. The wl module should be loaded. A wireless interface should be present. Until that stuff happens, no connection is possible.

The rfkill worked for me. I ran it, rebooted and my light on the wireless switch was blue!
Thanks for the help!
