Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

Hello,

I've been having an issue with the new gnome-shell. I've changed the icon (mouse cursor) thanks to gnome-tweak-tool however every single time I reboot or restart the gnome shell for that matter, the orignial icon (adwaita) boots up with some parts of my changed icon.
Indeed the adwaita icon shows up but the loading part of the icon (when a program is loading for example the icon goes into loading mode) is the icon i've changed adwaita with.

I've even changed manually the icon theme in usr/share/icons/default and did the same in dconf-editor but the same thing happens every single time.

I think it may be because adwaita is set as the default icon theme in one of the gnome shell file. Does anyone know in which gnome-shell file the cursor theme is set ? Or even which files are reloaded when you reload the gnome-shell through the command "r" ? Since every time I reload the gnome-shell, adwaita boots up.
I've even deleted the adwaita theme but once again it didn't change anything, it still pops up at every reboot or gnome shell reload.

And finally does anyone know how to tweak the gdm screen ? I've noticed that my laptop touchpad double click is disabled and I'd like to re-enable it. I've found a way to tweak the background but I don't really know how to customize the gdm screen ?

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

I've had the same problem with the cursor, I love the good old bluecurve so I was really annoyed that this theme wasn't accepted correctly. My way (well, it's a bit quick&dirty) was:

1. save the original adwaita theme
Code:
# mv /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/cursors /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/cursors.old
2. copy the new theme into the adwaita folder:
Code:
# cp -r /path/to/the/desired/cursors /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/
Now everything looks really good..

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

Just tested it and reloaded the gnome-shell but unfortunately, adwaita just loaded up once more.

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

Can't believe..because of the first command the original (adwaita) theme should be away..
Gave the above commands any error messages? Be aware you have to do this as root, sry I've not mentioned this..

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

Don't worry I'm aware it has to be done in root. I'm a developer & I know my way around a bit

Well, at first I thought I needed to empty the temp so I rebooted my laptop, but adwaita booted up again. I think that maybe the adwaita files are backed up somewhere else as well. Looked in the adwaita theme folder but couldn't find anything. Thought they maybe in the .icons folder in my home folder but it was empty.

Since I was fresh out of ideas I've deleted the adwaita folder but it didn't work. Which is why I'm coming to you guys.
Smoking_tux (love your name by the by) your idea was a good one but it I think I may need to do it in the other folder where the adwaita icons are backed up.

Any other ideas ladies & gents ?

BTW I'm running gnome-shell 3.0.2 but it was doing this since the 3.0.0

Thanks satanselbow but I knew that one. Unfortunately it doesn't work for the gdm screen. I was actually asking for that.

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

You rebuild the icon cache? See http://developer.gnome.org/gtk/2.24/...con-cache.html

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

Nope, so basically after replacing the adwaita icons with the one I'd like to boot up I rebuild the icon cache as well ?
By the way nice to meet you, love your work in the extensions of gnome-shell. Took your hacking and enhanced it a bit here and there (e.g make a gnome foot replace the "activities" on the top left corner) to make my desktop look pretty great so thanks for that.

But I do have the gtk3 package installed. Or am I mistaken and it's not included in that package ?

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

You're really sure that it's the adwaita theme what you see? Maybe you have installed the dmz cursor theme which looks nearly equal...

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

Holy pack of smoke. You were right, it was dmz. Just deleted those folders and voila....

Thank you so much guys.
So now any ideas about customizing gdm ? Do you know where the configuration file for the gdm screen are ? Found those for the background (/usr/share/backgrounds/lovelock) but for the rest I didn't manage to find them. I'd like to change few things here and there on that screen and launch some of the gnome-shell extensions right from the gdm screen. But for that I need to know where the files for the gdm screens are.

---------- Post added at 09:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:56 AM ----------

Actually just tested something new (for the now resolved icons issue) : restored the adwaita folder as it was (so with the original adwaita icons) and kept the dmz icons folder deleted (after backing it up in .tar.gz archives) and it seems to be working.

So basically it was the dmz icons folder that was messing with my newly installed icon (Vienna3). The weirdest thing was that I could see the dmz icon (even though it was the Vienna3 theme installed) and when I took a screenshot it wasn't dmz on the picture but the Vienna3 theme that was showing up. There must be something wrong with the dmz icon set.....

Anyway thank you so much all of you especially you smoking_tux.
Now will wait for your genius ideas about the gdm screen customization. Tried to find some intels through google but fresh out of luck on that subject....

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

No idea, likely it's better open an own thread for this problem, with a suitable title..

Re: Gnome-Shell Mouse Icon Modification

Okay I think I may have found a way.
While still looking tried to see the autostart app that gdm was launching and noticed that gnome settings was among them.
So launched the command it was using : "sudo /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon" and my gdm background was launched instead of my current background but all the rest was the same (gnome-panel, ability to launch the activities, etc).
Afterward noticed my touchpad click was deactivated so re-activate it but after rebooting my laptop it didn't hold.

Looked through the /etc/gdm files and noticed some shell files. My shell is a bit rusty but I may found a way through those to tweak this gdm screen.

In any case thanks guys for allowing me to bounce ideas off of you and giving me great ones.
while still looking I think I'll follow your advice and open a new thread smoking_tux....
