Anybody know why there's no Linux Netflix player support? My suspicion is that this is a copy-protection (or lack thereof) issue or that, like so many others, Netflix is joined at the hip to M.S. and is preventing it.

$300?? You could have bought a Roku player for less than $100 that will play Netflix. As far as why they do not support Linux, your guess is as good as mine. I suppose it has something to do with Silverlight. However, the Roku box is based on Linux from what I understand.

As nice as it would be, I'm 95% positive that would not solve the Netflix/Linux issue one bit. I'm pretty sure the Boxee Netflix app is only good for Mac, Windows, and is pre-installed on the Boxee Box.

Try installing the Linux Silverlight plugin and then change your browser's user-agent to a MS Windows one - I have no idea if this works but it is probably your best shot.

The article saying Netflix was outdoing torrent sites though, was posted on TorrentFreak--anyway, since the *AA are so worried about piracy, one might even hope they'd pressure Netflix, though there's a DRM issue involved as well. See

This apparently will not work - the issue is with DRM and apparently the Linux version of Silverlight does not have the appropriate DRM.

NO ! Boxee comes pre-compiled for Ubuntu and you can get source ode too.
You WILL have to play withthe support library versions to ge a goog link though.

I'm pretty new to linux, but wouldn't just installing vmware player, then booting a vm loaded with xp or vista solve this problem? I know that you have to continue to rely on windows, which sucks, but you'd at least be able to watch netflix on your linux distro. You can even suspend your vm while it has netflix open, so when you resume the vm it opens right into netflix

Maybe there's a way to install a version of firefox or IE through wine?

Yes, Boxee is available for Linux. However, that does not mean the Boxee Netflix app is available for Linux (outside the D-Link Boxee Box). This can be found in the release notes.

I have a Netflix account and asked a tech if he could tell me why Netflix doesn't work with Fedora, his answer was:

"Basically our service uses the Microsoft plug-in silverlight, which uses DRM. At the moment Linux operating systems don't have anything to support DRM, therefor we aren't able to stream through Linux."

DRM - Digital Rights Management

After some research it doesn't look like Linux will be supporting DRM anytime soon.

Thank you for that. I also think there's Licensing issues that MS intends never to be solved for Linux.

Roku box starts at $50

Big fan of the Roku boxes, I've got a couple of them, plus high speed internet, and a netflix account - that's all you need

Compiled what worked for my machine..
wget -c http://sourceforge.net/projects/post...xplayer.tar.gz
tar -xvzf Netflixplayer.tar.gz
sh Netflixplayer.sh.
This will install a separate app running under wine
If you encounter a error 1001 while trying to play a movie, install microsoft true fonts
rpm -i msttcorefonts-2.0-2.noarch.rpm
/sbin/service xfs reload
