this is flatly ridiculous

I upgraded fedora core 3 from test releases and had a lot of issues which were problems derived from upgrading. I finally reformatted and reloaded fedora core 3. Now up front there are some pretty ridiculous issues here, first: getting a non-gui command line prompt is difficult. Doing /sbin/init 3 leaves me a blank screened limbo, I have to reboot after altering inittab to default to runlevel 3 just to get a non-gui login prompt. And the biggest one right now, I did a "yum update firefox" and now executing firefox just does nothing. I can't get a browser window. Executing from console gives me no error messages, I see some activity of the firefox executable and then nothing happens. No console feedback. I removed firefox and reinstalled it, and it still does that. Has anyone encountered these issues? These are show stoppers, I'm writing this on my windows laptop because... well... it works.
