photorec to external drive

Yesterday I discovered how cool it is to change ownership of files and be able to delete those I do not want. I needed this knowledge because I have been trying to recover some files using Photorec and place the recovered files on to an external drive. I can see the drive in my media file and see it as one of the choices of where to send recovered files in Photorec. My problem is that when I choose this external repository, Photorec does not recognize it, and instead makes a file called recup_dir.1 where it puts the recovered files. When the folder in my media folder reaches a limit, about 40 gigs, I get a message saying that I have reached my maximum allowable storage and need to stop my search. I am at a loss as to how to get photorec to recognize the external drive. Please help
