Note that unrar is free. Although rar is available, there should be a license.txt file that explains that rar is on a try before you buy basis, free for 40 days, I think. It's an honor system thing, I don't think anything happen.
One can do the same thing, with very similar syntax, with p7zip, that is, create small chunks of a large file. Windows using friends should (I think--but am not sure) be able to open them with winrar.
