Re: Problem with install new kernel in fedora 14

I have the same problem, also running Fedora 14. I'm trying to compile kernel 2.6.37-rc5. I need to be able to compile a recent kernel, the included one doesn't work well on my laptop.

Figured it out! I looked through the readme (probably a good thing to do first...) and it said to use the command "make modules_install install" to install the kernel and modules. It's doing that right now on my machine, hope it works on yours.

I'm now running the kernel I just complied, it works great.

Re: Problem with install new kernel in fedora 14

hi guys,
i was also trying to install kernel 2.6.29.1 on fedora 14 but it is giving the same error at step
'make install'
even after performing 'make modules_install install', it is giving same error.
however initramfs,vmlinuz-2.6.29.1 and System.map-2.6.29.1 is copying in /boot folder and menu.lst in /boot/grub is updating according to new kernel.
when i reboot my machine and selects the kernel 2.6.29.1 it shows
FATAL:kernel too old
[1.591633] Kernel panic-not syncing:Attempted to kill init

any body please help.....

Thanks,
Anil

This is probably your problem. If I recall correctly, Fedora 14 comes with kernel version 2.6.32, and probably won't work with older versions. Go to kernel.org for newer versions of the kernel.

Re: Problem with install new kernel in fedora 14

fedora 14 comes with linux-2.6.35.6
it means we cannot compile a lower version of kernel on higher version of kernel??
is it you want to say??

Re: Problem with install new kernel in fedora 14

Some programs expect features provided by a more recent kernel version. which might not be available in an old version. Why do you want or need 2.6.29?

Re: Problem with install new kernel in fedora 14

What module? Can you get the source code of the module and compile it? Otherwise you might need to downgrade to an older Linux distro.
