If you are CERTAIN that mysql is not running, do an "rm /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock".
Then, from a command line in a terminal type in "/etc/init.d/mysqld start" and post the output from that command.

I am getting the same problem DEAD MYSQLD, I follewed you instruction of <If you are CERTAIN that mysql is not running, do an "rm /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock".> there isn't any file as such .sock.
Is there any other way then to re-installing whole thing (from OS to mysql)
Thanks

i got the same message this morning, simple did a /etc/init.d/mysqld stop and then /etc/init.d/mysqld start, solved it, but i would love to know what caused it, i'm running a server and any such unstabilities make me nervous (perhaps a little exagerated but ...)
Cheers ws

figured out why mysql died on me yesterday, yum had done an update. so it all makes sense to me, now to figure out how to restart updated services once yum has finished....
Cheers ws

have you set up root password? actually init script for mysql in FC (I belive it was fixed) is so stupid that it will only work with no root password... if you setup root (mysql) password you need to modify init script - kind of retarded but that is how it looks

oh and if you are wondering if mysql is running or not why not check processes list?
$ ps -aux | grep mysql
give it a try

did you install from the .rpm?? I remember reading a while back that this was a problem (especially with mysql 4). Have you done a search on this site, as well as google?? AS I know it has been discussed before, but I can't remember where I have seen it.

Check the mysql log for error messages: it's in /var/log/ somewhere.

Re: mysqld dead but subsys locked
Hey all,
I got same error when I checked the status of mysqld service - "mysql dead but subsys locked".
But I changed the owner of /var/run/mysql by chown -R mysql:mysql and then restarted successfully done.
