F12 -> F14 post upgrade issue

My system is Dell 4300S with 1.4 GHz Pentium processor, recently upgraded to 1 GB RAM,120 GB WDC1200JB hard drive Sony DRU-720A DVD/RW drive, ATT plugandshare wireless adapter with Atheros AR5001X chip, ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF video card, and Actiontec V90, and 56KFlex modem (Agere System Venus).

I attempted to use preupgrade to upgrade from Fedora 12 to 14 using wireless connection. It seems, that upgrade finished successfully, except I am not unable to get to a GDM login. I updated SElinux to selinux-policy-3.9.7-10 and selinux-policy-targeted-3.9.7-10, and touch /.autorelabel overnight, I was able to login using GDM once. And that is all. After I boot, after Ctrl+Alt+F4, I can login to terminal.

I am not sure, whether the following messages from upgrade.log.syslog would help to resolve this issue.

I appreciate any comments and hints.

Michal

Re: F12 -> F14 post upgrade issue

When you say you can't get to GDM what exactly does that mean? Does the machine boot at all, does it stop somewhere during the boot process, are there any messages printed to the screen?
Can you start in runlevel 3 or change to a virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F2), login as root and have a look at /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Re: F12 -> F14 post upgrade issue

The system boots OK, and I can login by CTRL+ALT+F2 or F4. The issue is related to the network. Below is part of /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log.
I have no clue what is wrong, since I have the identical key in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts in the laptop with F13 x64 also with Atheros chip and no problem.

Thanks,

Michal

Hi

First, run

# yum distro-sync

Then

# package-cleanup --problems

Hope it helps

Re: F12 -> F14 post upgrade issue

Since I can't make wireless network to work, I can't run yum.
Are any workarounds using rpm.

Thanks,

Michal

Re: F12 -> F14 post upgrade issue

I replaced wireless adapter with wired one and I performed

# yum distro-sync followed by

# package-cleanup --problems which produced following message

Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Package python-psyco-1.6-4.fc12.i686 requires libpython2.6.so.1.0
Package python-psyco-1.6-4.fc12.i686 requires python(abi) = ('0', '2.6', None)

After reboot, I still cannot get login screen. Below is a following extract from /var/log/messages

As for fresh install or upgrade, until F12 included, I was able to boot from Fedora CD1 and using askmethod continue graphical installation from the external hard drive with images directory from CD1 in the root directory of the external hard drive. Using the same method with F13 and F14 ended on anaconda hanging up without producing graphical installation screen.

Thanks,

Michal

Later, I found out that the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 was missing and there are still FC12 packages left.

I wonder whether some of these packages may be in conflict.

I appreciate any comments to help resolve this problem.

Re: F12 -> F14 post upgrade issue

I solved this problem by performing a fresh install of F14 from DVD using basic video driver option.

Re: F12 -> F14 post upgrade issue

glad you solved it
Just remember that with fedora EVERYTHING can change very much from one release to the next . So much so that what worked in one version might NOT work in the next version

Preupgrade ??? mostly works BUT again there ware some BIG changes it that also
preupgrade on f12 might not work with going to 14 -- the /boot partition MIN. size changed .

so NEVER, NEVER assume that just because something did work one way before that IT MUST also work the same way now -- it might not.
