How to upload images from a Sony digital camera

Hello,

I have a Linux-based PC, running Fedora 13, and am attempting to upload photos from my Soncy Cyber-Shot DSC-W310 digital camera. When I insert the CD that came with my camera, I get the following error message:

Archive: /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe
[/media/SONYPMB/Install.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe or
/media/SONYPMB/Install.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe.ZIP, period.

I spoke with your tech support person, and he indicated that I could press menu, and go to setting and select PictBridge on the USB option, but that does not work either.

Any ideas?

Never mind the CD; that's for Windows. If you've got a USB cable connection with your Sony, just plug it into a USB port on your 'puter and turn on the camera. You should see a corresponding icon appear on your desktop. Browse down into the icon and you'll find your pics, then copy/paste into a folder and done! And, if you prefer, Fspot's option should pop up and will find them for you, then copy/paste & done. Alternatively, if you've got a card reader, you can import them with the SmartCard that's in the Sony camera.

If you haven't already installed them, I'd install Digikam from the repositories and/or Picasa

There's also Shotwell, which I think would be the default option when you plug it in on F13 it'll ask if you want to open that application to view the pictures.

Re: How to upload images from a Sony digital camera

The CDs that come with most peripherals make great frisbees

The camera should just be recognised as a USB Mass Storage Device in Linux. Personally, I don't like F-Spot (Mono based) Shotwell thinks it needs to create thumbnails of all the images already on your disk. Nice job of duplication there! I also don't like the way it organises your photos, it does it by "events" (Dates) I prefer just to see my folders in the left pane. Digikam has all the bells and whistles but if you're using Gnome it will pull in a whole bunch of KDE dependencies. In Mint 9 that's a whopping 274Mb of extras for one photo app! Don't know what Fedora does. I like gThumb in Gnome, it might not be installed by default but it's in the repos. I also have Picasa installed but only to upload to my Picasa Web Albums.

Re: How to upload images from a Sony digital camera

I have a big stack of CD's that came with peripherals that I have never even broke the seal on.

I don't know about the Sony camera, but my Minolta works perfect just plugging it in. It mounts it as a USB drive, and I can do whatever I want from there just like any other disk drive.

However, I find it's much faster to pull the card out of the camera and put it in my flash card reader instead of plugging in the camera.
