random USB freezes on GeForce 8200 afer CPU upgrade

hi,

recently I upgrade the CPU of my fedora 13 system (ASUS M3N mother board - replaced Athlon X2 to an Athlon II X4).
at first everything seemed to work, but after some time I noticed that more or less randomly one USB device after the other simply stopped working. sometimes it was the mouse, at other times the USB soundcard - the whole thing was rather strange. however after a reboot everything was working again.

after some investigation I found out this seems to be an problem of the MCP78S [GeForce 8200] chipset under linux. at first I added the irqpoll option to the kernel params which improved it a bit, but still the devices would freeze.

now I seem to have found a working solutiton: disable irqbalance

after disabling it all USB devices are still working after several days .

however 2 things are still bothering me:
  • Why is the problem only happening with the quad core and not with the dual core?
  • How is the performance affected by disabling irqbalance?
