Using PuTTY to connect to a Fedora Machine?
Hi All!
Right now I have a machine set up running Fedora. I have configured inittab to accept Console Logins, but I am having problems getting my netbook running PuTTY to connect. How would I go about finding the Host Name and Port to connect to? I'm having major issues finding this information on Google.
Thanks!

Re: Using PuTTY to connect to a Fedora Machine?
I am slightly confused by what you are trying to achieve here, what do you mean by a console login.
I first read it as trying to connect via the serial port, but there is nothing in inittab that does that.
Please can you post your inittab.
How is the PC running putty connected to the fedora box? Ethernet/serial?

Especially since putty cannot give you a console login.
It can give you an interactive terminal session though. Set putty to use ssh.
Fedora knows this, and uses the standard configuration (port 22).

Re: Using PuTTY to connect to a Fedora Machine?
PuTTY is just an interface. It supports several ways of connecting. One of them is telnet, which you should not use, the other is ssh, which was mentioned by jpollard. Enable ssh in your fedora machine and enable it in the firewall of the fedora machine, then there should be no problem getting remote access to your fedora machine.

Putty also supports serial, which was (probably wrongly) my interpretation of a console login.

That would only work IF
1) a serial line is attached between the putty machine and the Linux machine
2)serial console is configured in the linux kernel
Problems would still exist - first and foremost, no messages during boot
unless the BIOS supports a serial interface -- most do not, and those that
do are on special systems, usually embedded systems.

I have connected to a fedora box using serial, several fedoras ago, just to prove I could do it,
That is what I had read the original post as, probably wrongly. Shame the OP hasn't posted back.
