Do I need firewall software?

I am a beginner for Fedora and I am wondering if I need any firewall software.
Or Fedora itself already has firewall and it is enough?

Re: Do I need firewall software?

It's already there.

Try from the top panel ...
System->Administration->Firewall

The gui interface is pretty clear.
enable/disable.
Various way to specify ports to leave open.

Re: Do I need firewall software?

iptables (netfilter) Already comes built with the Linux kernel in fedora.
The program to use to manage and create firewall settings is called :
Code:
system-config-firewall

Re: Do I need firewall software?

Thank you all very much for your reply.

I use KDE, and I just try to open the firewall. Then some error occurred.
I could not close the up layer window in the beginning which says some thing about GUI configuration
and manual configuration.

Every time I click the 'close' button, it hang there, and Fedora told me if I want to terminate
it and all its windows. It happened even I restarted the computer.

Will the firewall auto run every time I restart the computer? (If it does, then I will leave it alone.)
Is there any body has the similar problem?

Many thanks again.

Could you please open a konsole and run system-config-firewall that way, so that any error information is visible.
There could be a bug here to do with a dependency which is not installed.

As long as the firewall is set to on, it will. I think the default is on but would need someone else to confirm it.

I use KDE but Fedora 12 and it works fine for me.

Thanks,

Re: Do I need firewall software?

I just ran it, the error message was:

ERROR:dbus.proxies:Introspect error on :1.66:/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownObject: No such object path '/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager'

Many thanks again.

P.S. I almost update my system everyday, will it be a new bug due to the updates?

Re: Do I need firewall software?

I think that the correct course of action is to search the Redhat bugzilla for your issue and if it has not been reported, file a new report. If it has been reported; add yourself to the list on the bug report by adding a "I can confirm this" Comment and if there is a fix, test it out to see if it works then report back again to confirm if it fixes the issue. If there is no fix posted, when one is you will find out because you will be subscribed to the bug report by email.

Thanks,
Zanpactou
