Permission denied for partitions as non root

Hi all,

I recently installed fedora-12 on my new system. After the install i was able to access the partitions of the system and everything was fine, but not for long.

Then, for some reason i created a new user and deleted the one i had created during installation, which i've been using so far. But after that i am not able access any vfat partitions in the system.

When i checked in /media directory i found that its ownership is with the older user name, which i had already deleted. i tried using chmod, chown for changing ownership/ setting up permissions, but nothing has worked so far. How do get the permission for this..?

Please help

Re: Permission denied for partitions as non root

Try unmounting the VFAT partitions as root user and then remounting with your new user - if I remember, the VFAT file "owner" is the user who mounted the partition.

also you might want to double check the mount options in /etc/fstab and make sure there is no uid=xxx or gid=xxx for the old user as well.

oh, and to answer your question about getting permission to change ownership.. since the creating user no longer exists, you will have to do it as root. you shouldn't have to mess with permissions, though. change to the new owner and the permissions should still be fine.

get root access in a terminal window with su or sudo and then do your chown/chgrp
