xfs/drive issues

my hp proliant DL185 server hangs/crashes and sometimes do not boot correctly...

What says smartctl about disk's health?
Try to check them with software like mhdd from bootable CD.

smartctl shows disks are OK. will test more....

i got mhdd to run, I know i should be reading the documentation and sure will, but to speed things up, could you tell me how to detect whether any of my drives are in real bad state using mhdd??

There shouldn't be any red block (>500ms), also there shouldn't be any block with symbols inside.
If you had them - than you should backup your data and use "erase" command to clean hdd. If this willn't help use "EraseWaits". And the last thing that can be done - is to run "Scan" with "Remap" option. (All this things should be done ane by one, if previos did't helped) Good Luck!
Or may be try to ask on a hardware forums.

what do i run to test that?

Scan?

Sorry, i'm using mhdd for 1st time...
